If you are reading what I highlighted, that is from the previous section for carrying coils with the eyes facing up, i.e. the coils laying flat.

But the principle is still somewhat valid, even there. Think of the difference in stability of an 'A' pull vs. a 'V' pull. The A pull is more stable because it anchors the vehicle in place in relation to the deck, whereas a V pull allows rocking, even though the wheels don't move. The A pull actually fixes the vehicle as part of the mechanical structure as it doesn't allow the movement of the anchor points in relation to the deck that a V pull does.
I realize this is off in the weeds for many, but I'm a firm believer that understanding why things are done a certain way will make one a far better hand than blindly following what the rules say without a clue about the reasoning.
And just to be clear, this wasn't a critique of your post @Espressolane ,merely an expansion.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 27, 2023

On this we are in agreement. Funny you should mention the A and V tie. Often use that exact terminology when trying to help one of the other drivers with load securement. While I do have a few issues with the regulations for a few items, like cross (X) chains on some things(containers e.g.). They do offer a starting point and some basic standards, and have the required minimum for a reason. This is the building block to work from. That is an important key. If you have a solid baseline, you can expand and extend the concepts. Hopefully as one starts out, they get training from someone that does understand the concepts and can pass them along in a meaningful way.jamespmack, CAXPT, Feedman and 3 others Thank this. -
Personally I think this is the wrong way to chain a coil.
Is this V or A.
This 1 covers all the bases although I think the chains should be hooked to the pockets AND the spools to distribute the forces to 2 separate points.

I personally agree. But we have to look at what he is working with. I don't know him, but it's a wood floor steel drop deck. No chain pull ups. I feel he did well with his equipment. I would not haul coils on that trailer. But there is no reg on that.
I will say a mill that I haul for put out notice "No Step Decks" recently. -
Sometimes what is right, isn't legal too. Every load is a new load. -
That was just a picture I used, not picking on anyone in particular
But if I was critiquing the securement, there are a few things I would have issues with.Kyle G., cke and jamespmack Thank this. -
