We did not buy the Volvo Gen2 warranty, we bought National Truck, I think and I'm not an expert that they actually cover several types of trucks. That's the way it was explained to me and I read the warranty before we decided to lay out the extra $5000. Will see later this week it's actual value.:biggrin_25511:

I was advised to go with the Premium warranty on my engine and trans, over the Gen2 warranty coverage - it covers more, and I've been told that they don't nit-pick about what caused a breakdown as much. Although I stopped short of buying the injector coverage (cost was too high), in hindsight I might do it after learning that injectors are around $500 apiece! Personally, I hope the warranty is like owning a gun - the more you have, the less likely you'll ever have to use them!

We bought the National Truck warranty and paid for the injector coverage, but today we get to the shop to learn that the problems we have aren't covered. But it does cover everything that is in good condition on our truck.:biggrin_25526:

    daddy&mama2go,

I intend to take the truck to my local heavy truck center, they are a Volvo factory trained service center.
They even advised me to avoid the Volvo engines and go with a Cummings.

Yeah, the warranties only cover the drivetrain - they'd go broke trying to warranty every part on the truck. Preventative Maintenance is the best answer to alot of the "big" issues before things go bang.

Try to find an independent mechanic near home that knows what he's doing (and will tell you where he lacks knowledge, tools or ability). Have him check the truck over whenever you can, like when you have a lube in between oil changes.

I have the truck lubed and checked every 7,500 miles, oil and lube at 15,000 miles - along with a tire rotation every 15k. I'd do it myself, but it's a good reason to have it at the shop to be checked over (and I'm enjoying my own "down-time" right now - trying to catch up on the mail that comes in while you're gone). The rotations on the drives are the most important. Keep them in pairs, X them over like a car one time, and then have them swapped front to rear on the same sides the next - this will keep cupping and chafing to a minimum.

A friend told me the "secrets" to getting 300k out of a set of drive tires - and I listen to people that have done it. Simple really - keep them balanced - rotate often - check your air pressure regularly - and strike the tires to check them at every stop. The tires on my truck and trailer get checked about 4 times a day. It may seem like alot of trouble to some - but it takes money and time to replace them.

My new drives ($3200) were starting to rough up after the first 25,000 miles - and were sounding like the mud tires they are. I found a local shop that charged $182.50 to balance and rotate all 10 on the tractor, along with replacing a bent valve stem while they had it. The humming has died down some, just in the first 6,000 miles - and the irregular wear that was showing is already gone.

I'm headed over to drop the trailer and take the truck into the shop today - just to get a lube and check-up while I'm home. Hope it goes well, but I'd rather find problems here at home, than out on the road.

Have a great weekend everybody, and hope things are good for you and yours!

Our company frowns on the independent mechanic as they usually don't have the financial backing to cover any large accidents or other losses caused by human error, and everyone makes them. But I do appreciate the answer.
