These are two straightforward questions-
1. Do semi trailers in Europe, Asia, South America use the same kingpin dimensions as North America? Is there such thing as a universal kingpin?
2. Do foreign tractors use the same fifth wheels as North American rigs? I suppose the answer to the first question will answer this question.

I do not know about America but here are what is in use in Europe. Probably the same is in use in South America and in Asia.
But do you still use 12 V in trailers? I have seen trailers in Chile who were pulled by Volvos with 24 V and Freightliners with 12 V. My spanish was to bad to understand how it was made possible.
Have a look at https://truck-and-trailer.jost-worl..._TT/07_King_pins/01_Intro_Koenigszapfen_d.pdfRGT766 Thanks this. -
I'm not sure about voltage but were they American or European trailers in Chile?

They were made in Brasil by Randon.

Yes. Kingpin size and fifth wheels are the same worldwide. You have to know the history of trucks in Europe. After WW2 during rebuilding Europe used American trucks and trailer's for years before they were building their own again. They continued on with the American patented designs.
It has always amazed me how August Fruehauf came up with the 2” kingpin size in 1916 when a trailer was 18’ long and gcvw’s were 20,000 pounds. That size pin is still used today. Was overkill then. By 1935 Fruehauf and Holland Hitch Company with the FW35 fifth wheel had “standardized” the industry for ever.2rescuekids and RGT766 Thank this. -
Not the same. When I drove for KBR in Iraq, the fuel tankers had different size kingpins. Some were standard and others were 3.5 inches. The guys whose trucks had the 3.5 " fifth wheels had to be careful because they could hook up to the smaller kingpins. Until they hit a big bump anyway.RGT766 and SmallPackage Thank this.

Thanks. I wasn’t thinking of the 3.5” military spec. that many of the niche contracting companies use over there.
