If you were inclined to get a Harley, I'd suggest taking the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy New Rider Course. The cost of the course can be used to put a down payment on a bike. Their trainers are top notch, and you will learn to ride, right.
Wife took it, she was complete newbie, I took it with her so she wouldn't feel alone, and I learned a few 'proper' things that I hadn't been doing right as well. It's grueling but they train you to use that clutch zone like Six says, so you can slow ride to a stop, never drop your feet and keep the bike level. They also drill it into your head to ride with your head on a swivel, because no one else is looking out for you, but I suspect most of use having been drivers know that already, but when on the bike, we don't have the luxury of a semi for protection.
If the cost is too high or you're not a Harley buyer, try a local college. They often offer the courses as well, and they are taught by equally qualified MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) certified instructors, and usually at a more reasonable cost than the Harley course, but of course, there's no option for the down payment either.![]()

I still use my grandpa's old buzzbox most of the time. Bet it's 60 years old. I've seen used old ones 75-100$CAXPT, singlescrewshaker, cke and 3 others Thank this. -
I would add though that a point in the right direction does help a bit. Not everybody picks up vertical right off the bat. I still have trouble with it.CAXPT, singlescrewshaker, cke and 4 others Thank this. -
