Sometime in 1979, my usual pattern was to get up, breakfast somewhere, then before i started driving for the day bring my log up to date to that morning
But then I would not make anymore entries that day. Next morning bring it up to date. Always averaged close, but never over the speed limit...
In most cases if an officer checked your log he was happy to see it on the same day, they frequently saw drivers 3-4-5 days or more behind. If they had one at all. (left it on the counter in the truck stop....)
NC scale I-85 near Charlotte, officer on the scale asks for log book. I am about 6 hours into my day, legally should have had at least 2 entries for the last change of duty status, no 15 minutes for a pre trip even. He had me.
He says, "driver, pull over to the side over there and bring that up, then go. OK?
Yes Sir....
No ticket, no further up your bazinni inspection, no nothing.... -
I saw this set up yesterday East bound on I40 @ mm 138, before the Weigh Station. It is painted construction zone orange.

Yep
I got that one time .
Stop on the scale and he hood up and asks for log book ,
Flips it open and it’s three days behind,
He says park and come inside .
Hands it back to me and says :” tell ya what , I will write ya up for this , or you can catch it up and if you catch it up legal , with correct cities and mileage etc , without use by a map or a calculator , I will let you go .
So I caught it up , he checks it over carefully and says he’s made this offer to dozens of drivers but I’m then only one that’s ever caught up my book and didn’t break any rules .
I didn’t tell him that I made this same run twice a week , and knew every town and how far apart they were etc .
