Airgas, Love's....and DOT Transportation all all good suggestions....BUT -- because they are really good gigs, they can be pretty picky.

With that said -- and with your software background in mind -- you likely will need something to keep boredom (later) at bay.
Suggestion: consider tanker duty (i.e., past/beyond just Love's).
The following fleets take drivers right out of CDL school -- and will groom/train you for the unique requirements of the tanker world:
ABOUT | wdtmilk.com
or
Become a driver | Coopersville | Midwest Companies (mdtransport.us)
The above suggested work is also relatively recession-resistant; people still want ice cream and other dairy products -- in either good times, or bad (it's a "comfort food" thing).
You might inquire with the above -- and see if there are present/pending opportunities that get you home, weekly.
Later on -- after you get in some good experience with the above -- you can move on up to the higher-paying tanker gigs.

Yes, Western Dairy Transport probably hire you. Always milk to haul. Don't know about home time; call and ask.

Say WHAT? I'm a former trucker who quit the biz and got an engineering degree. A Software engineer is in even more more demand than my degree in mechanical engineering. Why on EARTH would you want to take several steps down the ladder in pay, work/life balance, and respect from the general public while working, especially in middle-age? Are you looking to distance yourself from your wife and kids? Is this some sort of personal penance? Do you "want to live like common people" (as in the song)? Inquiring minds want to know.....tscottme and SmoothBore Thank this.
