AZ68 from Kingman to Bullhead City is pretty bad. Ive seen a couple trucks in the river over the years. 13 miles on a 6% grade is along way down, and there is no flat areas untill the bottom.
I did Cabbage a couple months ago with no jakebrakes and right at 80,000, I had a Swift driver ask me on the C.B. why i was going so slow, was i scared, i said no, don't have jakebrakes. He said "I would not drive that truck, thats stupid." I told him if he can't get a truck down a mountain without jakebrakes he should cut his C.D.L. in half and throw it away.![]()

I went down cabbage in 10th gear at 80MPH once. I thought i was going to die. Obviously I wasn't driving, but i had the most incredibly stupid co-driver ever. It was her second day out of training and she said that her trainer said to go down a mountain in the same gear you go up it and she went up it in 10th...
what a friggin idiot. I dont know how someone could be so stupid. -
Should have asked him what the plan was if his jakes went out down the mountain...

Yea, I mentioned 68 to Bullhead a few pages back... That one will catch a newbe or someone who has never been there off guard. Then having stop lights at the bottom... ????
Not that the grades or so bad, but a few years back I went all the way across Wy on 80 to Salt Lake and it was ice and snow all the way across. They closed the hwy once, the minute it was open I was back out in it. That was not a fun trip. There was chaos nearly every mile of it from others spinning out, etc.. the three sisters almost made ne thow in the hat.
I have never had a problem with Cabbage, but then again it has always been clear when I passed thru. I can see how bad weather could cause probs there. -
Trout Creek Pass on US 285/US24 in central Colorado. only mountain/hill I drove down where my trailer tried to beat me to the bottom.
I came out of Denver in later afternoon deadheading down to Monte Vista for potatoes. Roads were fine in the low 40s, upper 30s. Right before dusk, there was a light foggy mist that coated EVERYTHING with light bit of moisture. Started climbing up Trout Creek, there was an accident on the opposing lanes, car ran right off the road down the ravine. Was going slow once I got to the top. About 5-10mph at absolute most coming down. I had intended to make Monte Vista and park the customer, but was deciding to stop at the Gunsmoke in Buena Vista where 285 and 24 split apart.
Coming down one of the curves, started to barely tip-toe tap the brake and the trailer slid to the left, I steered to the right towards the shoulder and let the trailer coast back under me before riding the gravel shoulder to a stop. Had a line of cars behind me. Drove the rest of the way down the hill in neutral going about 1-2mph for the next hour or so. The most nerve wracking drive of my career so far. Got down safely. That's the key. -
Does the driver cause fog, ice, rain, snow, stalled vehicles?

Yup s.e. mn is my neck of the woods and we do have some grades that will come up and scare ya cause you didnt think it was there. Theres one across the river I go down all the time in the conrete truck, its a 9% grade down with 20 mph turns and at the bottom is the town of fountain city and it comes to a T go straight you end up going into the mississippi river. Going up that 9% sucks with a chopped down cummins, top speed going up is about 5mph, good times....

Yup me to, ortega pass is the one I was on I think ca-74? not sure but may I was taking both lanes making the turns and had to pull off the right 4 times to let traffic pass. Bunch of cars honked when I pulled off to let em by, not sure if they were saying thanks or saying what the heck ya doing on this road trucker.

Something is missing from this, I've driven Trout Creek loaded when it's got snow/ice on it and never had a problem. You had to haven been going too fast to begin with. The only real downside to Trout Creek is that when it was built stage coaches were the travel of choice, it's never really been widened for 53' trailers so you have to take those curves wide which creates a problem for oncoming traffic. Hence the reason for the Motorcycle warning signs.

It's a SWIFT driver, he doesn't have a plan unless the company gives him one.
