Hello folks !! My name is Jeff, I'm thinking of detailing my experience in the trucking industry from the begining.
I am a 47 years old and have been a carpenter all my life. I have also been wrenchin on cars or anything with a motor i could get my hands on. 27 years ago i was 19 [i think] and i made a mistake that could still effect me today. When you're at that age not too many people really think about the future. I certianly did not. That mistake was a culmination of me being stupid and on drugs. What did i do you ask? I stole a car or two and ended up with a grand theft charge. Not to smart! I was sentenced to 5 years in prison, but because good time and other reasons that i am not sure of i did 18 months in north florida. What a nigthmare that was.. Trust me folks if you are young, prison is not a nice place to be. old for that matter!
After that little pause in my life , i bounced around the country for a few years with no real direction in my life.![]()

I was going everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Sure i had family, but being the way i was [ young and dumd ], i thouth that i could do better without them. [DRUGS] Boy was i wrong.
I finally hooked up with a nice little filly and started to see the trees in the forest. I sad to myself , self you are not getting anywhere. here i sit with a pretty gal at my sideand what are you going to do? That's when i found a job as a carpenters helper.I thought , man workin for a livin stinks, i could get back into that old lifestyle and breeze through.
As it turns out i stuck with it and finally did something with my life.
After a few years the little filly and i parted ways. Good thing now but at the time i really sucked. At that time i had been in carpentry for about 5 years and moved from
georgia to pennsylvannia.

This is where it gets a little nuts.I stayed working as a carpenter. My brother was married for 10 years to debbie. Sonya was her sister. The same day that i went to pa from georgia she left texas headed for pa.I arrived at my parents house via gray dog and was snoozin on the couch when 3 hours later in walks my brother his wife and her sister. Apparently we had met a few years erlier but i had no memory of that. I was reintroduced to sonja and being the smart ### that i usually am i said to her [ man you stink]
she had daisy dukes and a spagethi strap shirt on with a beer in her hand. She laughed it off and siad f u. I thoght cool , i like a girl with alittle spunk. 2 day's later after we both recovered from the gray dog thing, i was shagin that rug!

Wlee after 17 years of marriage and 4 little tag alongs, we got divorced. 2007 We split for 10 months and are now together agian. WOW!!! We lived in texas for 20 years and are now living in south florida. The kids are grown and gone, and it's just us now.As you all know the housing market tanked a few years ago.I have managed to stay working up untiljan 2009.
Since the i have been unemployed. 15 months. With out unemployment i would be living under a bridge somewhere.
This brings us to present day. I am starting at sage technical on monday march 15. somehow i got alittle luck on my side and wia is picking up the tab.4725.60 for those who care to know.Going to school and getting my cdl are not to much of a problem. With the economy in the toilet and trucking not at it's best, i am being cousiously optomistic that there is a truck driving light at the end of this tunnel.
Iwill update more as i go through this next journey in my life. Take care and drive safe............

First off, why are you stopping your posting and starting another? Just wondring.
I'm not sure what you're asking here but if you are asking if you have a chance with a felony I'll pass this on.
On the applications that I've seen on-line they will ask you if you've ever been convicted of a felony. Alot of them will then go on and say conviction of a crime is not an automatic bar to employment-all circumstances will be considered. So you never know unless the application or job requirement say no felonies. WHATEVER you do-do not lie on the application. Answer the questions just like they ask and do not volunteer information. For example if they ask if you've been convicted of a DUI and you beat the change then you would say no. Or they may ask have you been convicted of a felony in the past 10 years and if it's been 10years and 2 days since you had a felony your answer would be no.
It sounds like you've got your CDL school paid for so you're covered there. Your problems will start when you go and look for a job driving. You'll have to really hit the bricks and get out there. It took awhile for the driving market to get in it's current state so you can be sure it will take double the time to start looking towards the good. It may be 5 years it may be 10 years it's hard to say. All you can do is prepare yourself for a hard time in searching for employment. You'll have to cover bases that the normal CDL graduate wouldn't go. That means using the computer, paper, word of mouth, and just going to the company to search out the job. Good luck and let us know if you need any help. -
I am not asking for any advice. just telling my story to those who might be interested. I am not computer literate,so this is how it is. As far as the felony , i'm sure that i can work it around as it 27 years old.
also my school is pushing crst.Don't know why other than kickbacks maybe. I'd rather drive solo. -
There's other threads for stories. You might want to look at Stories from the Road. I thought you had a question in there sorry.

So 2 day's into training at sage 3 hours and 15 minutes the first day and 3 and a half the second ???? we are on fire!! they showed us traing vids from 1980. with a tom seleck look alike with turtleneck and all as the host. So much for updated training material.I hope tommorow is better as we will have the regular instructor back as he was out the first 2 day's.Needless to say it was a disapointing start. The good news is that i went to the local dmv and got my permit.Did'nt need the school for that!!.at this rate i do not see how we are gonna get 160 hours in 4 weeks. If anybody has been through sage, feel free to chime in.Is this typical???
Freebird135 Thanks this. -
Good Luck with Sage, I know nothing about them.
I DO know that florida is a tough place for drivers, especially noobies, and especially south of I-4.
Please keep this in mind while seeking a job.....in other words-take what you can get !
Again, Best Of Luck !!!The Challenger Thanks this. -
Interesting and you have a pretty good writing style. Keep it up.
Now as for the "old" training aids, don't sweat it. The "basics" of trucking are the same now as they were for the guy hauling wood to Noah's Ark... and that's exactly what any school is gonna teach you, the basics. All the latest whoopdi-doo electronic whizzbangs ain't gonna make you one bit better driver at the end. Just like carpentry, you're gonna learn by hands-on doing it. All the classroom is gonna do is teach you the difference between a saw, a hammer and a nail and where to use them. The skill part comes from actually banging your thumb a few times.
What you need to be concerned with is how much behind the wheel time you're gonna get out there on the practice course. Get in that cab every chance you get and back and turn and shift and drive between the cones and park and pre-trip and post-trip and hook up and drop... and keep on doing it until you dream about it.
I think you'll do ok. Because as I always say..... as a carpenter I make one helluva fine truck driver.
JustSonny and SprkPlug62 Thank this.
