If I'm reading this thread correctly, this is your 1st foray into expedited trucking? If so, you're finding what a lot of other OTR drivers find when they try it out. The waiting time. When you are used to doing (hopefully) constant loads, and have that "if the wheels aren't turning, I'm not making money" mind set, the waiting time with expediting can really get to you. It was hard for me to adjust to, when I did it before, and I had very little OTR time in before that.
If your o/o friend makes $5k a week, and only does one load, that's good money. His net pay to himself after expenses is probably still better than what he'd make as a company driver, and maybe equal to a 0/0 leased to a regular company and getting paid by the mile.
The trick is to have things to do to occupy your time, and watch that you don't spend much more per day than if you were a OTR driver.
Oh, and regarding all those flu loads, my future co-driver was telling me about that. Initially, those loads were being expedited (at higher rates) to get the initial supplies out ASAP. Once the supply started to catch up with demand, the companies started shipping them at LTL rates, since they didn't need to be delivered as fast. He had a few before the holidays, only had one after, at less $ per mile. He only accepted it as it got him home with minimum dead head.
Also, I think you were running tractor-trailer rig (E unit)? He also told me that for most of last year, E-units were being offered D unit loads (at D unit pay) if they were the nearest available truck, as E unit loads were not as numerous.
Questions about FedX CC? Let me tell you a little story.

Update.
Left from VA on Tuesday and went to Baltimore MD to p/u and del in Curtis bay the same day,sit for one day.
Picked up Wednesday same location for del in Huston TX the next day,set Thur,Fri,Sat,Sun and monday.
Went to Memphis for p/u on tues to del in Jacksonville FL that night, set Wed,Thur and got a load Fri to pick up on monday to del in SC the same day.
I talked to other drivers while i was out that were not with FedX that said they had been pulling FedX loads left and right.I also talked to another FedX driver Fri that said that the LG place in Atlanta GA had out side carriers picking up freight that was supposed to be locked up by FedX that had been brokered by FedX. We asked FedX about it and they did not know what we were talking about.Kinda seems to me that Fedx has found another way to screw there O/O's!
And that $5.000 does not add up to much if you have to sit a week or more to get that one run! -
Just got in.
left Monday to p/u in Cleavland TN to del in Savannah GA.set for 1 day then went to Philly Tues to del in Louisville KY Wednesday, sat till today then said the hell with it and came home.Talked to a few other drivers who were only getting 2 short runs a week. Also talked to a driver who had been sitting in Memphis TN since Tuesday. -
I don't really think you understand how expedited freight works yet. First, you're discussing things you shouldn't be, second, expedited is not like regular freight ( I started in Oct too and got that much figured out...real fast!), and third, no one has freight off the west coast! It all sucks and you're doing good to get $1.00/mi out there.

When we go to Cali we get 2.50+ out and back but we haven't been out that way in over 2 months Even expedited should not sit this much.We got one run last week that paid $700 to the truck, That's it and we set for the rest of the week! Dispatch even said that freight is very very slow and has been for the past weeks.
Now they are telling us that we have to get a 53 foot trailer because the FDA has said that it no longer wants trailers that are over 5 years old hauling pharmaceuticals, even though i cant find nothing on the net on this. Even though he has spent over $30 grand on his 48ft trailer in the last year and it passes all tests performed by fed ex he still has to get a 53ft. FedEx told him that they will give him a new 53ft trailer and take
5% off of his gross for it.
Sounds to me like FedEx wants a little more money in there pockets and all trailers 53 ft even though we have yet to need a longer trailer.david07003 Thanks this. -
We have found out that the story told by Fedx about the FDA and 53ft trailers is complete BS. Im telling you,FedX is getting just like ever other company, they will screw you faster than you can blink!
I guess you just have to take it like a man! -
When I was running teams, I made #### good money, depends on WHERE you take a load to. Also, with every load you take, you want to MAKE #### sure you get relocated and paid for the relocation to a good city with freight. Yes you may sit a couple days here and there with a TEAM. But more than likely not if you CHOOSE the right location to deliver and be relocated to.
As a solo driver now, I get screwed out of loads up the ###. I also found out that FedEx only pays 19% for Fuel Surcharge which is .19 cents a mile. 5 miles is less than a $1.00 a gallon they are paying for fuel. lol Terrible!!! -
It's obvious to me that the light bulb hasn't come on for you, or the O/O of the truck.
FedEx CC has contracts. MANY of these contracts have pre-determined d-time rates, under the amount you quote. The customers you mention I KNOW have d-time contracts; I have picked up where you mention many times.
The other side is managing your deadhead strategy. You weigh the costs, and many times I dh to a better place to pick up freight. Yes, I am WG and T-VAL, but in 18 months I have never let myself be yanked around the way you have. Your driver is making many bad choices. Yes, there are lease trailers, for reefer freight. T-VAL is a different story. That is why I keep my T-VAL quals current. I stay competitive.
FedEx is by far the most competitive out there. YOU HAVE TO LEARN THE EXPEDITING BUSINESS!!! IT IS NOT YOUR USUAL TRUCK DRIVING BUSINESS!!!
End result, I have averaged over $1.70 all miles, for the last 16 months. Every month. If I make less than $2000 per week take home, that is RARE INDEED!! -
I have several friends in the WG division. I know they will deliver and sometimes sit for a day or two, sometimes more, but it is their choice. They do not take a load that pays below what they think they should earn. That being said, one O/O says he runs about 120K miles a year and grossed over $280K. Now most O/O that are leased to companies do good to get $.94 per mile plus fuel surcharge, do the math. Heck yea, I will sit for a few days to average $2 mile for my truck. Oh, don't bash the CDC stuff, this one O/O sat for a month, yep, no miles, but made over $40k that month. The money is there, you just gotta know what loads to take and which ones to turn down.
BTW, I am waiting on an O/O to put me on the truck. If things work out, great, if not, after 6 months I will buy my own truck and lease with FEDEX CC, and apply to white glove as soon as I can.
I also second what the other guy said about talking about some of the freight when you should keep you mouth closed. I don't know if you are WG or not, but you should know it is a no no to talk about what you are hauling and where you are going. The rules were put into place for a reason..... -
fedex CC is good if you have the right O/O....my O/O turned more loads down in the last 2 months and is complaining why he makes no money....I,m looking for a O/O ...i have my Fedex Tag and i was driving for 9 weeks ..i Have CDL A licence and drove 42" sleeper box truck
