That would be Sams gap at the N.C., Tn. line, Buckners gap between Sams gap and Ashville, N.C.. I bet you probably loaded that sand over in Spruce Pine,N.C., straight up out of the pit, right?

Nope. The problem was the mist turned to a perfect coating of barely visible ice on everything in sight the moment it hit freezing. Which was just as I was starting up the northern side of it. By the time i hit the top it was bad, but was still drivable. The southern side had many hidden nooks out of sunlight that had frozen faster. One was a slow right that curved back around to the left. As I turned to the left, the empty trailer started to slide ever so gently across the opposing lane. I just hit the clutch, turned to the right a little and let gravity pull it back under me.
There was nothing holding the trailer to the ground. -
Never really ran out west too much but I remember Vail being treacherous in the snow. Makes me wonder about our guys out west pulling doubles and even triples over some of those passes with no jakes and cut back motors. They have the same truck in Colorado that a driver in Indiana has.
I don't run over any big Interstate grades here but some of the US and Pa highways I used to run a lot have some nasty hills that are tough going in the winter. US30, US22, and Pa 350 all have some big grades with curves making for some treacherous night driving during the winter. -
The ones that I have found the most interesting are Town's Pass in Death Valley. Goes from 6% all the way up to 9%. Loveland Pass is also interesting. Had to stop on a straight section of Loveland to let a Wrecker hauling a fuel tanker get around a corner and straighten out. Been through Denver-Silverthorn so many times that it doesn't bother me anymore, just keep it in a lower gear.

Donner pass is not hwy 50. it's I-80

any mountain pass can be bad. if you dont know what your doing ,you have to know your truck and the surroundings all time. Donner, the Cabbage patch. the Grapevine AND MANY MORE dont forget Rabbit ears.all these passes can kill you.

Thats the idea Sporster2000 keep it in a lower gear. NEVER grab the big hole!!!

haha i took loveland pass one time when i was a total rookie. My second week on our own truck with a girl with the same experience i had. OMG. Scared the hell out of me!
I wouldn't blink an eye if I went up there now, but man, I was totally not expecting that. Especially since i wasnt hauling a restricted load...I thought I was going through the tunnel! (it was closed to vehicles over 13'0 height for re-paving)
On loveland, it really wasnt the grade that bothered me, but the sharp curves. -
Donner pass hands down but im not scared of any been down almost every mountain

Hwy 58 through Tehachapi in CA is fun. Also I-8 west going down into the desert out of San Diego can be gnarly too. And once I had to detour the Eisenhower tunnel because I was haz mat and had to take Loveland pass (el 11,990) which added about an hour travel time. There are also a few twisty goat trails going down into the desert in So Cal that will keep you puckerd as well. But just add snow and ice to even the littlest hill and it becomes a MONSTER.
