my question is, in order to "qualify" for the vision exemption do you have to already have a cdl (and experience) or can someone without a cdl qualify for it and then be allowed to go get a cdl? the way i read it, it appears that ONLY current cdl holders may be granted the exemption in 2 year increments? wtf? no newbies allowed?

point taken, however, IMO bad vision from an older experienced driver and bad vision from a newbie is still bad vision at the end of the day. which is worse, a newbie with a bum eye(s) or a driver (new or experienced) thats diabetic and morbidly obese that smokes 2 packs a day with sleep apnea and is at a constant risk of a heart attack or falling asleep at the wheel but he can see! im not intending on sounding ignorant, i know there are many many drivers out here that are very health conscious and take good care of themselves. i'm just trying to have a serious discussion on this matter. i personaly feel these exemption laws need some change. mainly the whole "if you already drive its ok, if you want to learn to drive its not ok."

Anybody can develope a blood clot while sitting all day driving!!! I say instead of taking the closest fuel punp to the store take the farthest! Just to get blood pumpin... Bet you wont do it!!? When your at home and take the family to wallmart you drive around that parking lot 7865 times till you get close enough to get in!! Haha funny! But if you bought a new flat screen 48 you would carry that 7865 miles back to your trailer!! Too funny! I live in a trailer at home but out out here i live in a truck!

Drivers with Type II diabeties (insulin dependant) cannot be medically qualified. Drivers with BP of 180/110 cannot be qualified.

The DOT is in the process of developing a DOT Medical Examiners Board. Only DOT trained physicians will be able to perform DOT medicals. Sleep apnea is a key concern and is currently being examined how to identify the problem. I suspect eventually drivers over weight or sleep apnea may not be qualified to drive.

    Be safe.

I love how right now you can write up your own physical forms and get away with it. There's enough quack doctors that will give anyone a medical card + have given out so many they cant verify if they actually did a particular one, that you could just write down their license number and name and get away with it. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of medical qualification.

I also love how chiropracters are allowed to do them. LOL.

hey frank, let me just say i am going thru the diabetes exemption right now. i am type 2 on insulin and i do not have my class a cdl yet. hopefully going to school in aug. call this # 703-448-3094 this is the # for the exemption waivers in d.c. you'll have to leave a message but they will get back to you in a day or 2. they will be able to answer all your ?. i asked once why i took so long to call back and was told she talks to about 60 drivers a day. so it isnt just you that has ? i hope this helps.
