I've been driving a school bus for the school district I live in since October of last year...coincidentally about the same time I got interested in driving OTR. It's worked out very well for me. The $$ aren't great but hey, I'm in Mississippi. I'm blessed in that the small (+/- $1000/month) income is adequate for me. I'm fully insured and can go to a free clinic at the high school in the neighboring city for minor issues. I'll be leaving this summer to begin life on the big highway but I do not regret for one second my decision to drive the big yeller.
Anyone with a CDL A or B who can get P/S endorsements and pass a background investigation can drive a school bus in many/most/all districts.
The kids can be a challenge but I've found that fairness, consistent enforcement of rules for behavior and a loving attitude can go a long way toward making the experience a good one.
If you're looking for options, either short-term or long-term, check it out!

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
Driving a school bus: Not a bad option while you're waiting!

On another thread you said you had a bad temper....so which is it(?)...beat em
with a big stick with a loving nature?
Reminds me of what my father used to say just before the whooping started..."this is going to hurt me more than you!" At the time I thought to myself..."yeah right, I'm sure it will"...until I had to do some whoop ### on my son...then I understood...It did hurt me more than him!JustSonny Thanks this. -
I wouldn't make a "Good" bus driver....
I would have "Rules"...
...And today's society hates "rules" and " boundaries" set by adults for children....
In other words.... I might be regarded as an azzhat by both the kids and their "Free thinking-Birkenstock wearing-granola chewing" parents....JustSonny Thanks this. -
Back talking freight? No thanks. Where is my winch bar?
JustSonny and American-Trucker Thank this. -
No need for a winch bar....Just tarp the little azzhats...oh wait.....your nic...I forgot.....
JustSonny Thanks this. -
I should have said had a bad temper. My fuse is not as short as it used to be...age, sensibility I guess. I never lost my temper with kids too much though. My son experienced my wrath more than he deserved probably. It worked out okay, we are very close and thankfully always have been.
These days I'm pretty good at going with the flow. I'm proud of that! -
Parents can be a problem! But when their kids are on MY bus...they belong to me.
