Wow stories like this make me really think. How many times have I utterd under my breath about stupid A.K steel rules. Man I hope this driver was ready, or as ready as one can be. This one sure hits home for sure.

They should show pictures of that to incoming drivers. When I pulled logs I saw a trailer that was crushed when a cable failed. One of those giant clamps that grabs the whole load at one time.

It hits home to me too. I have been there many times before, and they are safety conscious. I really hate to hear when something like this happens. From what I've heard, they were loading a slitted coil in the stand-up position, (BAD IDEA!) and apparently the chain broke, knocking the driver off the trailer, and then falling on him and crushing him. I have always said slitted coils should be shipped on pallets, and refuse to haul them if they're not. Coils are dangerous enough as is. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I'm not going to pretend I know anything about flatbedding because I really don't but (and I'm not necessarily blaming the driver) why on earth would you be anywhere near it while they're putting it on the trailer? I thought the only thing the driver did was secure it after it was placed.

It wasn't a single large coil you're probably thinking of. They take and slit the coil to different widths for their customers specs. It would have been 5 or 6 narrow coils that would stand side by side in the up right position. But they can usually only load them one at a time. This may be the reason he was on the trailer.

    rubbergearsnextyear Thanks this.
