I wasn't told that either and I didn't know trucks weren't allowed I still didn't realize even after I noticed I was the only truck on there. Lol.

I finally saw the no truck sign and called police out there. They escorted me out of there with no ticket and only a mild bit of ribbing. Lesson learned

I find it funny that since everyone (myself included) that has experiance refuse to go to NYC so they have to send the inexperanced drivers.

You know what i find funny? I drove for the big Orange fleet and they knew i was from brooklyn N.Y. and in one years time, they sent me to the city twice? yupp, much smarter to send a newbie that has lived in Rooster poop all his/her life!

I ran a dedicated route to NYC from Rogers AR and my last year doing it I made 74,000 in mileage, and bonuses and unloading pay! If I can get back on the road after recovering from this freaking medical condition I'll volunteer for it again! A road is a road and NYC has a few of them and I'd rather drive NYC that those nightmares called Chicago, Atlanta, LA, DC and a few others mainly because anyone stupid enough to pay me $100+ to cross a bridge I'll take their money in a heartbeat!

As for no overnight parking, LOL there are all kinds of parking in the 5! I have several "regular" parking spots that are close to the subways and I still have my MTA card so I can go have some fun in the city or visit friends. LI is the same, parking all over the place! All you have to do is look at the signs and look at the day so you don't get a ticket!

Do NOT go into Manhattan with a 53' trailer! That will get you a really high dollar ticket! But, it's cheaper paying it than getting an oversize permit. My company would have paid that ticket but in my 2 years on that route I never got the ticket but I think it's from all the donations I made to New Yorks finest when I had damages I needed to get rid of and the NYPD is a great friend to have!

As to making that right turn that you've had a problem with I guess you kind of forgot to swing left so you could make that right turn and don't pull all the way up to the corner if that light is red. Stop at least 1/2 truck length back and wait and when it changes head towards the left and then make that turn.? Most (Key word is MOST!) of the drivers in NYC can tell that you need to go that way and will let you make that turn. Just pay attention to the don't walk and walk signs and when they start to flash that light is going to change in about 10 seconds. Take ALL of the left lane and watch that right mirror and you won't have to cross into the on coming lane of the street youre turning into. This is good advice for any crowed city! Oh and try Boston downtown some time! Think NYC is bad? ROFLMAO!

As for the guys that jump on the running board and offer to guide you around a construction zone or low overpass. It's true. Years ago when I was learning NYC I had a couple jump on the truck but it was the real thing. They can tell from the hung dog look you have when you can't make that turn or go straight through that you need help and it's usually a $10 tip to them and can be worth it unless you want to take a chance on your own. just don't pull that wallet out until you stop and roll up the window, pull the money out and hand it out a partly open window.

The best trailer security is believe it or not a 9/6" x1" bolt with 2 nuts. Put on the first nut and tighten it all the way up to the hasp jam the other nut up against the first. thieves have bolt cutters BUT have you ever tried to cut a nut and bolt? They don't carry 9/16" wrenches. I all my years I have only had my trailer broken into while at a stop light and that was on a Hunts Point run were I got off on Winchester and got stopped at the light and they got me for 4 cases of prime rib from Dodge City! That was back in '92 and I've never had a problem since using the nut and bolt system!

AS I said in another post get a foldout paper map of NYC and not rely on that road atlas!

It might take a few trips into that big city but it's always a learning experience and listening to the old hands helped as I was learning back in the 70's and keeping your eyes open and moving watching where the other truck go and do doesn't hurt either!

    Good Luck

I've been driving over ten years, with the same company. I'd turn in the keys and clean out the truck if they tried to send me into Brooklyn.

For ones that say these stories are old rumors or myths are just plain foolish.the people that jump up on your truck does happen and looking to make a buck. Advice is don't get to close to the car in front of you always have enough room to go around and if someone jumps up on your cab just start heading towards a pole they will know what you are doing and that you were here before they will jump off don't stop.

Believe it or not, you can take a truck into the GSP, but they are only allowed in the southern region of NJ. Thats about it.

You are absoulutely correct. i believe it's south of toms river where trucks can run, maybe further south than that, possibly south of the old atlantic city expressway.
