Yeah I thought about that. That’s why I was thinking maybe have it borescoped. A reman head I could do, but a junk block would be a big problem.

Only way I think you'd be able to borescope it would be to pull the injectors. There'd definitely be a few hundred in labour plus new injector o-rings and seals to put it all back together.Rideandrepair and VolunteerTrucker Thank this.

How many miles on the truck? Does it need tires, brakes, etc. The engine issues could be only the start of what the truck needs.Rideandrepair, W923 and VolunteerTrucker Thank this.

Tires are good, haven’t looked at the brakes yet. It’s hard to really investigate much on a truck when you don’t wanna start it lmao about 1 million miles.
I’ve got other options I’m looking at, but just thought I’d ask some more knowledgeable people on here.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
If you are buying from an O/O who has all the receipts for clutch, rear ends, trans, and the cab and paint are in great shape then maybe. If it looks like it has been pulling containers out of ports, run away.
Rideandrepair and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Yeah it looks rough.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

That’s nuts…there’s a guy around Quincy ill that has been doing it for 20 years and he’s around 150 per hole plus travel time. He has done lots of different engines for me and rarely is the protrusion less than.001 different from end to end.Big Road Skateboard, Rideandrepair and blairandgretchen Thank this.

Could get lucky and get years or might only be days. You won’t have a clue until you take it apart. And even then you won’t really know till you try. I know it’s a little different but we’ve got old cat loader that we use at the shop that has serious protrusion problems and sometimes a gasket lasts a couple months other times it’s years. One only lasted a week. The parts cost around 150 each time and I can do it in about 5 hours. we never seem to find the time to fix it right so just keep putting gaskets on. Try this at your own risk but a thin coat of jb welded on the edge of the liner helps as does a very heavy coat of k and w copper coat. As far as liners and pistons if it runs ok and there’s no major scoring just look the other way and put it back together. If everything goes well you’ll get a year and save money to fix it right. The bad thing about cutting the counterbores is you have to pull the cylinder packs. For the long term figure on a full out of frame over haul
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I should have clarified. Dealer was for salvage sleeves. They are the only ones cutting for them.
The othee guys only cut Detroits for shimsW923 and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
How rough is rough? That’s the question. $5k sounds like a deal. Is it worth spending money on? Is it a parts Truck? You can do a lot for a little on these Trucks. Might as well do it right. Cost a lot less overall.
