I started as an O/O with Swift 10 years ago and am thinking of going back to them when I return from Iraq. I also would like to know what Travelinman is asking. PS, I have a paid off truck.
-
I talked with a couple O/O who said they are doing fine and getting 3000 miles a week. I just wonder if others are experiencing the same.
-
I also personally know ones that are only getting 1200-1500 miles a week no matter how hard they try to get more thrown their way. Just like everything else with Swift, it's luck of the draw. OR who's ### you kiss. One or the other.
-
Yeah thats what I'm afraid of. I wonder if those drivers are now getting 1200-1500mi or was that last year during the hardest part of the recession. Freight does seem to be picking up. Companies appear to have stepped up their advertising efforts too.

I am training with a L/O. He has regretted his decision. He made more money as a company driver.
There is a push to get more L/O. Two questions they ask a mentor is "do you think this student would make a good mentor?" And, "do you think this student would be a good lease operator?"
They sent a message out on the Qualcom leting us know there is plenty of opportunities for L/O's. And the way it read they are now willing to bring in outside trucks. Before it has been only a truck you got through them.
The talk around is freight is picking up. And by January of 2011 things are really going to be rockin. The trucker channel on Sirius radio said 1 out of 4 trucking companies are either going to close their doors, or sell out to the bigger boys. In case you didn't notice Swift is the biggest trucking company in the world.
I wouldn't do the L/O with any company. I may buy my own rig and lease to a company. Not for a while! -
I agree with you. Your trainer went wrong when he leased his truck from Swift. Basically he's leasing from 2 companies, Swift and the company Swift leases from.
From what I'm hearing the O/O are getting 3000miles a week. But these are the ones that lease from Swift. I'll have to check with O/O's who buy their truck separately to see what miles they are getting. There must be some cost benefit to Swift for giving more loads to O/Os than to company drivers. -
I fail to understand why someone would lease a truck from a company that tells them what color it has to be.

"I am training with a L/O. He has regretted his decision. He made more money as a company driver. "
herein lies the problem, IMO. say SWIFT pays it's contractor's .90 base /FSC .24 at current price 2.96, (1.14) total, but it cost's you 1.24 p/m to lease their tractor.
that's the real of it with just about all the big companies out here dont get sucked in. -
The color of the truck was not a deal breaker for me. The real deal breaker for me when I was considering it is Swift does their o/o's just like a company driver. They shoot you a preplan, if you don't like that certain one because it takes you too far out of good shipping lanes they put you back at the bottom of the list of o/o's for a load. I would never sign on for that kind of monthly payment without being able to pick loads from a company board and choose the loads and areas I want to run too. Never would I leave the success of MY business up to a planner. Least of all one of Swift's planners. Anyone that has driven for them for atleast a week knows most of their planners don't have a brain cell in their heads. imho.
