One vehicle i had my 102 inch whip was on the mirror of a ford pickup with just enough coax to go from the antenna to the radio, and the swrs were pretty flat 1.0, the other rig was a 73 scout 2 with the whip mounted off the rear bumper and i had a foot or two of extra coax and had swrs of 1.1 to 1.3 and i never had a spring on the antenna of either rig.

I just don't understand why I can't get my swr low.
I'm good with the lil wil, and I'm tuning in the same location with the 102', I'll give it another try without the spring, but 2 cars same location high readings worry me.
The lil wil worked great on both cars. -
I got a spring for my 102' and my reading on the SWR is 1.5 on both channels, is that good or bad.
-
A 1.5:1 reading is good, that's only a 4% loss which isn't bad at all.
One thing I don't know if I mentioned or not but when you do an SWR check you have to calibrate the meter to the antenna for an accurate reading. Otherwise the knob will throw off the reading. -
Since the 102' is tall on my Toyota Corolla, how much loss is there if I tie down the 102' so it wont stand up so high.
Does that effect performance. -
Yes. The antenna needs metal under it to properly radiate. if you're talking about grasping the top tip of the antenna and pulling it over and securing it so the tip is bent over close to the car, you will run into some SWR reflect when you key up.
However if you wanted to do this to get the car in the garage and out it would probably be ok, as long as you remembered to release the antenna back to it's normal erect state before you keyed up. Just make sure you have a strong mount for the antenna since you're might put a lot of stress at the base. -
I have a tri mount with a spring, but I think from now on I will just leave it up and tighten the antenna tight with some pliers.

I wanted to know what I could add to my Uniden 520xl and the 102' to get better performance.
I know I'm limited with such a CB, but probably there are some extra additions I can add besides an amp, which I don't want to add.
I did get it peaked and tuned, but anybody know what else I can add to make the performance better. -
so can i do the same with a 10 in.shaft, add the shaft then cutt off 4 in. from the whip to get 108 inches ?
-
I have a L.A. 225 amp. how much cable do I need to run from it to the cb? and how far do they need to be apart from each other?
