Dave...this issue is addressing the truckers specifically by the trucking authority, the FMCSA
...since the truckers won't use common sense, the authority sees the NEED to address the issue in their own rules, which makes sense to me. There already are laws on the books for ALL motorized traffic, and we as "Professionals" see the problem escalating, not just in the general vehicle traffic, but also with the "Professionals" themselves.
Yes it has...the "taming of the wild west" is a good example! Before "law" was established in the west, the "mob rule", or the biggest, fastest gun was boss. Once "laws" were established and enforced, the west opened up to civilization.
They haven't forgotten, they have (long ago) discovered, that the general population doesn't care about what they do as long as they don't step on the toes of the population...until the "stepping on individuals toes" happens...government gets away with anything.
no more cell phones for truckers

having a passenger isn't as big of a distraction as using a phone.
it's not illegal to have your seat belt off if you're not going over 25 MPH (in most states, it's something along those lines.)
numerous exhaustive studies have shown that a hands free phone doesn't change anything. you're still concentrating on the conversation rather than the road. if people would just put the #### thing down while they're driving, we wouldn't have to have yet more laws to tell stupid people that they can't do stupid stuff.
sorry, but yacking on the phone while driving is NOT a right. smoking is NOT a right. animals do NOT have rights. -
I have been a big supporter of requiring hands free devices for all drivers big trucks and four wheelers alike.
And anyone texting flat out deserves jail time, I have went as far as having Verizon completely remove texting from my plan.
and common sense needs to be used by everyone.
I have had a number of occasion where my cell has been of great use example you know you are with blocks of a place and you also know if you miss it you are going to spend an hour getting turned around lets say in Chicago, no place to pull over but with a cell and a headset you give the place a call and they talk you right into the place.
so which is safer making that call of fighting with the crazy four wheelers that are not going to give an inch so you can safely make the turns necessary to go and try to find the place again?? -
It will only be "new" in the FMCSA...directly pertaining to truckers/CMV
Don't do it...don't worry about it!
No I don't remember that...I do remember when the "Seat belt rule" was an advisory issue though. but a primary "probable cause" it is now!
They are there to serve and protect...the law abiding citizen...but the criminals and those who like to "flaunt" the laws think they are there to harass and generally make your life unbearable!
UMMMM...you were "texting" weren't you? whether you were looking at it or not...the point is you were breaking the law! But you sound like you think you are "special"! Using your logic..when you zip your pants, because you don't need to look, you are still "zipping"!
They use the term "related" because you were intoxicated (even if your BAC was in the "legal" range...you were still intoxicated...therefore "related".
Alcohol CAUSED, is a different statistic than alcohol RELATED!
If you have a few drinks, then you shouldn't be driving period. But since you are under the influence (again legal or illegal BAC will be a contributing issue) it is again therefore RELATED
You want privacy? Then stay in your private home and do your drinking and texting in the privacy of your own home!
I didn't think you were that old...GEEZER!
I would not advise becoming a bookie, or one who figures "odds"...your mathematics skills are definitely RELATED to your job performance and a profit margin. the odds don't change in this one, the possibility of being involved in increases...not the odds.
But the percentages are dramatically different...since fewer than 20% of the people owned or drove a car in 1909...must be a liberal!
There were no cell phones in 1909...but everybody had a tin can and string!
PS I'm with you on the beating part though!

They were Martians...I found out right away that the "sex plumbing" on a Martian is reversed (male/female)...he thought he was chasing the females...but in reality...well you understand...I just didn't have the heart to tell him!
He was having so much fun with the "guys"...(*snap, swish, flip with his left hand*)
simplyred1962 and JustSonny Thank this. -
When is the emergency or crisis so "time sensitive" that it outweighs the potential for disaster that results from the distraction? Professional drivers have to make split-second decisions. Isn't it better to have extra seconds (milliseconds?)?
-
Are you trying to "re-hijack" this thread?
JustSonny and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
Sounds like most of you can't multi-task at all. They better pull two way radios out of all race cars because ####, you can't talk and drive at the same time.
Same with tanks, how batteries, and Hummers.
