2017 Kenworth T680. Drove through icy driveway with inter-axle lock on. Forgot to turn off. Shut off the engine. Unloaded. Air pressure leaked out almost completely. Turning ignition results in grinding noise. Jumping solenoid results in starter motor spinning. Hit with punch and/or hammer changes nothing except once when starter motor spun freely a second then back to grinding.
It feels like starter problem, however, lack of any forewarning makes me worry about the Inter-axle lock being left on. Could lack of air with lock on somehow affects the flywheel starting mechanism? Might there be damage to the starting mechanism, such as the flywheel, from using inter-axle lock more than intended. Did I do any damage with the six or so failed cranks (albeit short in duration).
Help is on the way to replace starter. However am quite worried something else might be wrong, as I am in frigid temperatures and in the middle of nowhere.
Any chance the mobile mechanic will replace the starter and not fix the issue. If air pressure is needed, how to re-pressurize, through the air dryer or the tank?

    starter.

having inter-lock on has nothing to do with the engine.

inter lock is the rear ends. long ways from the engine.

Unless you have some weird frakenstien steup that i would TRUELY love to see as others have said, nope its a starter issue. Best bet is grab a dude, hand them a hammer and make them beat on that starter like it owes him money while you crank. If it starts leave vehicle running until replaced. If it does not start and you have a stick shift, have someone use their gladhands to give you pressure then give your truck a yoink if they are able and try to kick start it. If your on a hill have someone give you air then roll and try to kick start.

If none of the above works. Get a tow truck.

I had a starter go bad once. Also had lost air. I unhooked trailer, had another OO pull me, brakes on Tractor were set. We slowly pulled it just a few feet in 2nd or 3rd gear, it fired right up. This was on a Freightliner with parking brakes on only one axle. My next move was to back off the brakes. No need. It was surprisingly easy to get started. Worth trying if ever in that situation.

The only way i could see this being related and it is a long stretch of the imagination is. You have the trans in gear with the diff lock switch still on and engaged and you try to crank the engine over without releasing the clutch.

The leak down and loss of air with the inter-axle switch left on with engine shut down just means the the actuator on the diff itself is leaking or the air supply hose between it and the switch. This still has no relation to a bad starter, just another problem by itself.
