So you want to buy second, old engine and then have it rebuilt... ?

I was wondering about blocking EGR cooler, because from what I have heard, when it start leaking, it actually leaks coolant to the intake, thru the EGR pipe. That pipe can be blocked easily I think. Then we have pretty much pre-EGR engine, except for ECM programming...

One of our trucks is an EGR ISX...the egr valve just went out for the 8th time!!! We sent it to our local diesel shop to have it replaced. So the technician brought up this idea to change it all over to pre-egr so we wont have the valve failures anymore. They had never done one B4...so we pondered it over a little bit and decided to be the guinea pig. Evidentally the turbo, exhaust manifold, and the whole ecm has to be replaced. So i called up and checked on it the other day and they had it on the dyno doing some testing and doing some fine tuning b4 they cut me loose with it. It was getting out 680hp:biggrin_25525:!! Thats pretty good for being a 525...havent got it back yet but kinda looking forward to it. Kinda curious to see what kinda fuel mileage its getting now though.

No its a 2005...this swap is probably gonna be really expensive but i think it will eventually pay for its self after a while...being the valves keep going out and spending money to have that replaced and not to mention all the downtime its creating. This one was an ox b4, cant wait to get back in and lay into it now.

since it was pre DPF, why not "TEST MODE" the EGR>? / rather than doing a whole change.

Because of the hassles of trying to "convert" an EGR equipped ISX, I am looking at getting a complete pre-egr ISX engine assembly. Can get one and have it rebuilt for no more than it would take to mess with the EGR engine. The turbo and ecm and other goodies would already be a part of the engine assembly and no need to "tweak" anything. Just rebuild the engine and put it in.

That's the general idea... buy a pre egr ISX, have it rebuilt.

Until then, I didn't need to make any modifications to get my EGR ISX to run better and get better mpg..... just unplug the lower egr plug and tape it over. EGR stays closed and is a nice temporary solution. No CEL and 1 fault code that shows "electrical circuit disconect" on diagnostics. Had it disconnected for almost a year now. No problems, no derate of engine, less soot, better used oil samples, increase of .8 average mpg. And Cummins shops could care less and give me no grief.

When the time comes, just replace the engine with a rebuilt pre egr model and that way would not have all that other emissions plumbing.

If you get onto the Vanderhaag's used truck parts website, they have a list of available ISX engine assemblies. They usually list cpl numbers and sometimes serial numbers. If what you are looking for is not on the sight, give them a call. They will usually look up information and supply it.

I think PDI has and ECM conversion flash file that all you have to do is flash the ECM and it deactivates the EGR from working. You can also get an addition to the file to be able to run whatever turbo you want instead of the vari-vane turbo.
