A diesel will run on Jet A, kerosene, heating oil, and even refined vegetable oil. Heavier fuels like Bunker C would need a pre-heater and a strainer, but it would still run on it.....

The thing about these fuels is that their has not been any road use tax paid on them (even though Jet A costs MORE than road diesel WITH the tax...), so none of them would be legal. I knew a guy years ago who had a Mercedes 240D, and he filled his tank with a hand pump straight out of the heating oil tank in his house.

Back in the early days of unleaded fuel, I was told by an old farmer (consider the source) that adding a gallon of unleaded per 50 gals of diesel would keep it from gelling. Never tried it myself, but always figured I would give it a try if I ever got iced up.

Pre-2008 that’s what we did when I was driving for my old boss. There was only one truckstop in Idaho Falls that would carry #1 and it was a pain to go to if you were staying on 15. If it was cold cold and we were headed up through Salmon we’d fill in Idaho Falls at Dad’s (now Flying J) and leave it down just a bit. Then we’d pull into the pumps at Mud Lake and put in 6-7 gallons of gas and take off. Once particulate filters and a bunch of heat came into the picture we decided that’s probably not a good idea anymore.
