Today while I was driving through rural south Alabama I was thinking about how they could make the CDL training at a school more realistic to the backing you really have to do.
I was thinking it would be cool if they would have a fake "dock" to back into. Like a chunk of wall with a fake roll up door and the black pads you see on most of them on the sides. Teach drivers to back into that. That would be much more realistic than backing between a set of orange cones on the ground. I've been driving a truck for many years and have yet to have to navigate around a cone on the ground when backing into a dock. I have had to back around a huge hole in the parking lot that was caused when a piece of machinery fell off of a flatbed, though. That was fun.
They also need to use the trucking schools trucks and have them one truck spot apart and have the students learn to back between two very real trucks. That simulates truck stop backing. Again, more realistic than the whole cone thing.
