Hey all.
Just got my CLP and now i'm in a pickle.
I don't know if CDL school is an option due to previous college experiences of mine. Don't think I would qualify for FAFSA and I cannot afford to pay tuition.
Would it be smart of me to ride with people I know, learn from them, learn how to drive, back, and everything necessary about the life of trucking.
Should I do this and save up for the schooling or would this be enough if I did it for long enough?
I know this is a pretty dumb pair of questions and probably pretty easy to answer, but I just want some advice and insight from others. Thank you for understanding please don't bully me lol

CDL school is required now. You can apply for a trucking company cdl school or get free cdl school from your state WIOA Program.
`
Would be a lot sooner though if you attend a trucking company cdl school.
Where is your location, state & nearest town?tscottme Thanks this. -
Iowa, Ft Dodge would be the closest CDL school to me. About 40 mins away.
As far as I know, friends of mine had some experience already and went to some sort of 1-2 day training and then were able to get their CDL. -
How long ago was that?
Now you must attend a school listed on the FMCSA Registry or a trucking company cdl school.
Training Provider RegistryDwellsouth, drvrtech77 and tscottme Thank this. -
Those quickie schools today are refresher courses for those that already have a CDL, but have been off the road for a lengthy period of time.

Within the past year I believe, this guy is fresh from high school as of last year. I'm only a few years older.
The guy he told me about/website is on that list.
This would technically work then? If it's just a day accelerated program, then in theory would I be able to get the experience needed by riding with others and then go and do this? Or does this just look like one of those quick refresher schools.

The website says you just need a cdl permit.
If it's on the FMCSA Registry, then it must be legitimate. That's not much training unless you're just going to work on a farm or ranch. Most trucking companies want 160 hour cdl school. Some will take 120 hour cdl school. -
Noted. I appreciate your help and the fast responses!!Chinatown Thanks this.

It's no longer legally possible to get your CDL by "just riding with a guy" to learn how to do it. All new CDL applicants have to receive ELDT training from a recognized provider.
Every CDL school will find a company willing to loan you money for CDL school. WOIA is a grant the MAY pay for your CDL school expenses. Half of trucking companies that hire newbies offer Tuition Reimbursement to help you pay for school.
Find the company you want to work for, have them judge your background (assuming you pass CDL school) AND THEN DECIDE what to do about CDL school.Last edited: Feb 8, 2024
Wunsch Thanks this. -
That's no longer possible since the ELDT requirement in Feb 2022, IIRC.Wunsch Thanks this.
