I know in Tejas you have to start over again, and with the new law passed you now have to start over again and test with a school. No more just showing up in a truck and testing on your own.

It's a state issue. In my state. Not NJ, if your CDL is lapsed/downgraded for 5 years or more, you start over at CLP, school, endorsements, etc. If it is lapsed/downgraded 4 years & 364 days or less you submit a fresh medical & are reinstated.

You probably won't have to pay for cdl school. New Jersey WIOA Program pays for cdl school at no cost to you.

There's also trucking company cdl schools that are free to you if you agree to work for the company for 12 mos.

I was recently told by my state DMV that you have 1 year from the date your medical card expired.
Produce a current medical card and CDL will be reinstated.
After 1 year start the process all over. $$$$$Chinatown Thanks this. -

Theirs the keys go pick the trailer up and bring it back.
That was my training early 70's.
Took my DMV driving test in my pickup.
Only time I ever took a paper test was to get my DL at 16.
I was grandfathered in on everything until Haz-mat endorsement came around my second test on paper.
Today its all about how much money they can squeeze out of your walle
