I've done reefers, flatbed, dry van, tankers.
Did reefers for 18 years and no regrets. I ignored all the complainers and never cared what their opinion was about reefers. I liked it is all that mattered to me. I did the 48 states irregular route refrigerated trucking.
You'll also haul dry van loads in a reefer trailer. For example, car batteries from Ohio to Los Angeles, then frozen food from Los Angeles to El Paso and then ceramic tiles from Texas to Florida. Tomatoes out of the Florida Everglades to somewhere in California. Apples from Washington State to the East Coast. On and on. Really liked the variety with refrigerated trucking.

I know some companies will give tuition reimbursement even if it was a different mega that trained you. For example, train at swift switch to Werner Enterprises after a few months and Werner pays for the swift school. This was years ago they were doing this and I’m not sure if its still a thing. (I went to a community college and have no regrets but did end up working at a mega for a few months anyway before jumping into oilfield tankers)

To help you narrow things down a bit the first question we need to know is what type of hauling do you want to do? Flatbed, reefer, dry van, tanker, hopper, belly dump etc. When you answer that question, it will help you narrow down the company you want to train with as some companies have different divisions.
The first time around I went with Prime inc out of MO. They had and have reefer/van/flatbed/and tanker. My training with them was very good. I made the mistake of getting into the lease purchase starting right out. Had i went company I might still be there today. On top of the training the equipment was good, the terminals were very good. My trainers fleet manager and my fleet manager were excellent. The pay for company drivers was average for mega carriers. This time around I am going through an independent school to get my credentials back. I am going to get lots of laughs here, but I am taking a strong look at Swifts flatbed division and I have a pre-hire interview with them today. If i get a pre-hire I will be reaching out to some drivers that have been there from 1 to 3 years to get a real perspective. I am looking at a few mega carriers simply because I am in a position where I do not need the job to pay my bills, I need a job to put money in savings to purchase a house. With up turns and downturns in the industry at least with a mega I know they are not going to go out of business and I am going to earn a pay check each week. Sure in a slow time i might not get as many miles, but i am not going to need to find another carrier because they need to layoff people or sell off assets to stay open. Another mega that is not associated with my school that I am strongly looking into is Schneider. They have a few different divisions and home time that meets my needs. Once I am rolling there are a couple areas in TX I can relocate to in order to get into the division or residence I want. So hopefully I gave you insight into one school program, and some questions and examples you need to answer for yourself to help you self-determine what company might best fit your needs. As you answer those questions and narrow it down to 3 to 5 choices people will be better able to give more insights. Best of luck.

Also remember, some companies like Prime do NOT pay while in training, you get food/lodging covered for orientation Phase I, then a 200 a week loan for Phase II, you don't get "paid" until Phase III (after CDL)
