Truckstop showers in the 70s were a pot luck mix. Union 76 useually had individual stalls in the Mens Room, with partitions and a door like the toilets, TA , Petro, and some others had private room showers, many truckstops just had a big open shower room in the Mens room like Jersey City Plaza , there was Bills truckstop in Linwood NC , it had a big open shower room right across from an X-rated, peep show arcade upstairs in the Truckers Only Lounge area, A fuel stop on route 9 in New Jersey had a big industrial parts washer tub with hot and cold water running to a hose that you could just climb up in and use , and you could lock the door too. The schoolhouse truckstop in Chillicothe OH, had school locker room open shower. And I remember a strip club in Northern West Virginia that had truck parking and a shower downstairs that was just in the middle of the basement of the building, no curtain or anything, and people would just wander downstairs while you were showering. Hartford PA had a truckstop with the shower room downstairs from the fuel desk, and the fuel desk ladies could look over the back balcony right down into the shower room ( that was a cheap thrill), so . . . Yeah showering in the 70s was an adventure but , Hey I"m not bashful !
Oh and womens showers were almost non-existent .
also out West, KOA campgrounds would let truckers park and use the camp showers too, for a couple of bucks.

There is a pair of service plazas on the PA Turnpike called "Midway Plaza", one on each side. The larger of the 2 is the original service plaza from 1938, and there was a pedestrian tunnel UNDER the turnpike for drivers from the far side to come over. It had fuel islands, a Howard Johnson's restaurant, a truckers bunkhouse, and showers.

No, I'm actually only 62, but my dad's family goes WAAAAY back in PA. Also, I often drove the PA Turnpike, and the magazine American Heritage had a long article about the PA Turnpike on the year it turned 50 years old. I also heard from old-timers how awful those accommodations were in the final years, and the piss-smelling tunnel as well.....
