They use a wooden fender wall as a rub rail to help keep the barges off the piers on RR bridges. Needless to say a wooden wall is no match for an ocean going vessel, but, I’m sure a heavy steel beam structure would have helped to an extent.
This is 3 mile creek bridge in Mobile, Alabama. The main line coming in and out of the csx yard. In the background above what is shown in the picture is the route 90 / Cochran / Africa Town bridge that crosses the Mobile river.
Further north or (east as we know it) is bayou Canot where the barge struck the bridge causing the Amtrak wreck back in the 90’s…

Walked in the house few minutes ago, seen this on one of the news channels. Looks like the pier is laying on the ship itself, just not sure what it hit first. Did see in one video fire and sparks erupting from along the base of the pier, still not sure what it struck first, to dark.
Bridge should have been tall enough that the ship couldn’t have hit it I would have thought…?
