I happen to run across some old paper work I have from when I first started and it was kind of funny. I applied for a job back in the late 70's with a flatbed company out of Jacksonville Fl that paid 4 bucks an hour. When I took the road test the guy gets in the rider seat and tells me to start the truck ( of course I was doing the pre-trip). He starts going off because I didn't use the glow plug to start the engine. It was summer in Jacksonville at least 90° out. I went around the block and said no thank you.
Or going back even further and remembering the compression release?
Remember Glow Plugs?

I had to learn about compression release's in trucking school, and the low air flag.

Newer trucks, pretty much anything we would be able to drive, got awaay fr0om glow plugs, but reefers and APUs still are produced that use them. The new ones are usually automatic.

My first truck had a 3406a cat in it and it had glow plugs, did'nt matter if it was summer or not ya had to use em, alot of are cat dozers still have glow plugs on em.

I remember Glow plugs, Low air flags, compression releases and trailer air supply valves that wouldn't shut off when the air pressure dropped!
I even drove the west coast in an old '56 International tractor for a while that had a gas engine a 5 speed tranny with a two speed rear end and air over hydraulic brakes...That means it had hydraulic brakes for the tractor and air brakes on the trailer.
A friend of mine in California still has that old tractor all restored as a collector piece.JustSonny Thanks this. -

All our skid loaders still have the glow plugs. I used to have an 86 cutlass with glow plugs.
