The law itself makes sense for the time it was written. Liability is limited to the remaining value of the ship and can't be transferred to other entities. Considering at the time the concept bankruptcy was non-existent and debtors prisons were still a thing, and most ships were a single company (yes there were "fleets", but the concept is a far cry from modern corporations) the law protects the cargo owners and other debtors.

In today's world, I believe the law should be applied to the value to the company, not the ship itself. It's an interesting legal niche.

Some pictures as food for thought, or “thinking drinking”, or whatever you all prefer.

The red X and arrow indicate the concrete support that got hit, and the blue circles on the satellite and underwater topographic maps indicate the west cable pole.

Why don’t we just seize their ship and auction it or cut it up for scrap…surely make some dent in the bill
I have a feeling something along those lines is what would happen if it had been a truck on the highway

That is in effect what the shipping company is proposing, but similarly to a single truck company - the assets won't even come close to covering costs.

Ship is aground, may have to be offloaded, and some mention of a pipeline being involved, too.

    Too much information.

I was looking at the sonar scan, and it didn't really occur to me
that you will have to deal with the 6? lane road bed, blacktop,
and concrete base under it, dropped in the channel.

Maybe they could get a tug to pull it aside?
How you gonna cut that into pieces?

(Added thought: this may require underwater explosive demolition
to sever roadway into manageable sized pieces.)

I think Maerske and the people who have cargo in their containers might have to chip in as well. When the ship that blocked the Suez Canal last year was released to continue its voyage to England, even quite small consignees had to pay extra to get their stuff released. There was a one man band who sold imported furniture who was affected, cost him a lot if the delay in getting his goods was added in.

I was listening to the "last guy over the bridge", and he said, as he was going over the bridge, he saw a cop car going the other way in a hurry, perhaps trying to close the bridge as if he knew something was going to happen.
