I've been told here in North Carolina you can have passengers in the back of a pickup truck, provided the truck has a rear window that opens and must be open at the time.
This sounds a little fishy to me, does anyone know where I can find the actual law?

You might want to read this.
It talks about seat belts.

I live in NC and the law states that NO ONE under 16 can ride in the cab of a truck. I am sure the above URL will tell you this as well.
-
It clearly says that they can ride in the front.

i see where it says :
§ 20-135.2B. Transporting children under 16 years of age in open bed or open cargo area of a vehicle prohibited; exceptions.
But what if everyone is over 18? all that link talks about is kids

Who is not covered by the restriction:
North Carolina people 16 and older; persons 15 and younger if a supervising adult is present in the cargo area; when the child is belted; emergencies; parades; vehicle being used in agriculture; vehicles with permanent overhead structures
If I'm reading this right Its saying that anyone 16 or older can ride in the back, correct?

I meant in the bed of the truck. Sorry.

same link but a different page..If I am reading correctly you can ride in the back of a pickup truck without being restrained, if you are over 16 Yr old. It is illegal only if you are under 16. You can page forward and backwards also there are links to subjects covered on the side of this page. Hope this helps.

Thats how I read it too, I wanted to make sure I was reading it right before I got a ticket.
I only have a need to do this for 2 reasons. I camp outside Charlotte Motor Speedway every may for the 600 with my Friends and the showers at the track are like 1.5miles from our camp site and theres only room to park like 10 cars and theres 1000's of people camping, so we just pile 10 people or so into my truck never go over 15mph anyway.
The only other time I do this is when I take my boat out with my Friends, my truck is a regular cab and where I launch my boat Its $5 per car to get into the park, so everyone rides in the bed the 3 miles from my apartment to the lake.

I am from NC and you are reading it right you have to be over 16 to ride in the bed of a truck.
