Not arguing that or anything else…the point I was addressing is about buying competitors and expanding

Were Rodeway and Consolidated competition or just fellow teamsters needing bailout ?

    Yes&yes
BUT neither one needed bailing out ever
    Truth time
1-The so called Yellow Big R merger was actually and honestly a hostile stock takeover by then Yelliw freights board leveraging tons of their own stock to buy up Big Rs….then when close to a corporate takeover…that btw would have probably bankrupted both..,they over this bs merger solution and of course with more acuasitions and poor management the rest is history….although it took #### near 20 years
2-CF was Never in financial trouble…their full intention was to bust the union which they knew they could never get out from under….so they slowly acquired regional carriers across the country that were failing due to deregulation and created Con-Way which yall know now as XPOand in the process purposely destroyed CornFlakes
The companies union/employee disdain came to full bore on Labor Day weekend 2002 when they abruptly and horribly closed the doors….purposely and deliberately Stranding thousands of drivers all over the country…who were met by mgmt officials and law enforcement at the gates of their destination terminals….relay points etc and were abruptly told to get your #### outta the truck and left abandoned

Supply and demand. When everyone can get a CDL for a couple of days, bad things happen.

You are incorrect. The only regional carrier CF bought was the one in the northeast, (which they eventually closed because they were union and making trouble). Everything else was a start up.

Ok I remember them buying Penn Yan thought they bought Standard in the SE…either way start up or purchase the entire thing was long thought out executed…they only thing I’ll never understand is the amount of CF guys who refused to believe what was happening

Right. Penn Yang. As far as the SE went, it was a ground up enterprise. I was there.
As to your other point, in the early 90s, the union guys were tired of the union guys. That's why Roadway bought all of those regional outfits and tried to put them together (it didn't work at all). I think CF saw the folly and decided to build from the ground up.
I remember driving by the CF place on labor day and seeing the signs. It was unbelievable.

Everybody and their mama going out to buy trucks so they can have the privilege to haul freight below the cost to operate!

What a time to be alive! Incredible!
