And always use more chains than you think you need
my friend that does heavy haul uses 12 chains
three on each corner .
and sometimes one in the middle on each side -
Stick with it man. You lucked into a section of our industry that’s almost recession proof. As has been said, you went this long and are obviously competent, get the endorsement! Keep moving up!

Talked to my neighbor about how he does his route planning .
He said he estimates how far he can travel each day , and looks over the permit and uses a paper map to trace the route and makes notes on where to turn ,
The permit says “turn north on hwy 16 at the intersection of hwy 36, “ or something like that .
he uses a paper map and makes notes of is that a right turn or left town etc , and uses Google maps to look for landmarks , is there a Texaco station at that intersection etc ,
Is it a stop sign ? Is it a traffic light ?
How much room available to turn with a 62 foot trailer with 27 foot rear overhang ?
etc etc
a couple of permits said he was supposed to call the police a half hour before arriving at a particular town and ask for an escort through town etc
uses Google maps to look for overpasses and then uses street view to see if the overpass has a height sign posted etc . Uses Google maps to see if he has to cross any railroad tracks etc .
There was another thread on here with someone asking for a software that’s gonna generate turn by turn directions for his oversize drivers, and that’s just not realistic ,
Planning your route is part of oversize , and if you can’t figure out a way to plan your route that works for you , you’re not going to succeed at oversize .
that’s part of why oversize pays more , you gotta use some logic and common sense and planning ahead etc
and a lot of drivers just are not capable of doing that .
You sound like the kind of driver that can handle planning your route , so I’m sure you can handle it .
Anyhoo , he said when he gets parked for the night , he estimates how far he’s gonna travel the following day and familiarizes himself with the route by looking at a map and making notes and looking at Google maps to identify potential trouble spots and then street view to see those spots up close .
If you get into a jam, and need help with traffic to get turned around or you’re following your permitted route and get to a bridge you can’t fit under or the road gets too narrow etc , stop and call 911 and ask for assistance with traffic control .
On very rare occasions the responding officer might be rude but 99% of the time they would much rather stop traffic for a few minutes and get you safely turned around or whatever , than respond to an accident and spend hours filing out paperwork .SheepDog Thanks this.
