Local driver hours in a day expectation

And since I’m in a grumpy mood, why would you join a career where the hours of service are 11/14, and most likely in FL 12/16 and expect to find something at 8-10 hours a day? I guess after 21 years of doing this, at the ripe old age of 40, and still knocking out the hours needed to do the job it just rubs me the wrong way that this is even a legit question, now…rant over. @firemedic2816 for what it’s worth being within 45 minutes of Disney is probably unobtainable, the cost of living in that general area is through the roof. I have a good friend who is a mechanic at Disney, he lives back towards Tavares, nearly 50 miles away. You can find water there, in the form of a lake, but you will pay a premium to be there. I didn’t mean to come off as negative as I did, but it is overwhelming to be pushed out of where I’ve called home for so many years, not only by the congestion, but the rising cost of living here. We recently sold our home and had to rent locally because of the quick close, $1,835 monthly, nice house, new build, this home closer to the attractions would bring 3K, or nearly 400K to 500K on a sale price, just a heads up on what is truly going on down here.

 

No worries, we have been looking, it doesn’t have to be Disney I would be happy anywhere
Plan is to sell our house up here probably will get $300k for it, gotta wait till daughter graduates high school, she is wanting to get her cosmetology degree first so probably won’t be til 2026

Sadly Utah seeing same problems with migration. I don't spend much time on politics because it just ends up getting me mad ..... But it has become obvious that states that have more relaxed policies are atttaing more businesses, better economies, and sadly many many more people. And the costs of living skyrocketing because of it. Our housing is super limited and super expensive. Especially compared to 5-10 yrs ago. In Utah you pretty much need to make over $85k annually to even consider purchasing a home, and rents are thru the roof and more expensive than a mortgage. Especially if you have a family.

 

Last place we had local LTL, when I started 3 box trucks and 8 tractors, covering mostly NJ into PA and NY and we paid Overtime after 50 but guaranteed 50; 5 days a week. That's ten hours a day average expectation from the employer.

Years ago I worked at a slip seat cyro account back under the older HOS of 10 hours driving/5 hours working/8 hours of between shifts. We expected a preloaded unit to do 5 hospitals in NYC and the tractor was dispatched with another driver 15 hours later. Fifteen trucks, 32 trained drivers mostly 5 days a week....that's how the company makes money...Edit, this was with union [Local 312] drivers.

 

I live in Port St Lucie which is about 50 min drive north of west palm. Florida is not the same Florida it was 10 or even 5 years ago. Housing prices apartment rentals, Food, gas, population and traffic are just through the roof. Home insurance so expensive people are leaving the state because they can't pay it. I like Melbourne and Viera but you have people escaping the traffic and prices of south Florida and bringing it up north into these areas. I would look very, very carefully before you pull any triggers to move here

Haven’t you heard there’s a driver shortage?
Actually, to support additional drivers they’ve gotta build enough demand to justify the extra drivers.
Hot topic at the moment is right sizing.
Balancing capacity with demand so that everybody has adequate work to avoid paying out guarantee.
I know our dispatch is constantly getting loads from other carriers to keep us rolling and making money.
Idle equipment costs them money.
Better keep trucks moving to generate revenue than idle time.
Drivers that aren’t making money don’t stay long.
My personal gauge is how much i exceed my guarantee.
This time of year, i better be 200+ over or something is wrong.
Thankfully, dispatch has been really shining especially on weekends. a couple short days mid week are more than overcome on the weekends.
