At what point while I’m creating my own authority do I have to quit my current company?

    When you get everything in place then you have to make the decision. You can drive for two companies BUT the hours of service will not change.You cannot run two elds.

    Just keep working for your company. When you obtain your Authority you want to make sure you can establish work. Everything on the spot market right now is low pay, especially because we are in a Freight recession with to much capacity. It's not the best time to operate your own Authority unless you have signed contracted customers or a dedicated customer you can operator for them daily. Plus you want to make sure you invoice them 30 day period (reoccurring income is why a lot of trucking companies are failing because of their overhead expenses) another reason why you want $25k to $40k as a floater expense for your business so you can avoid sinking during a bad few of months. Most brokers don't work with New Authority in the 1st 90 days. It's really not worth the overhead expenses of Insurance etc. Especially if you're just throwing away $1500 (or more) per month just to keep that insurance needed for your truck/freight insurance & not generating money for your business during that 90 days.
