What this driver posted is spot on.
In reply to your response to him, if you're looking to reduce turnover, you're thinking this whole thing backwards. You're actually going to increase turnover & increase your incident ratio. Why? I don't have a problem with, and I approve of standard forward facing cameras, I do not approve of AI forward facing cameras & will never stand for driver facing cameras & I think you're going to find that probably 95% of the drivers here are against it.
Let me post-face that statement with this. I have 39 years out of the last 42 years in a truck seat (I had a 3 year break/split). I haven't made it this far by banging into stuff, getting tickets & DOT violations etc.
The company I work for has started implementing this stuff within the last 3 years. They have AI drifting, hard braking, following too close etc & recently installed AI forward facing cameras. My wife & I have already discussed this. If they implement driver facing cameras, I will retire! The ONLY reason I have stayed through this AI technology is because I'm safe enough not to be getting many reports. Most all typical "real life driving situations". People pull out in front of me, small town traffic lights with 3 second light changes etc. You're correct, I don't get penalized for this, but it goes into a database that I had a hard braking, etc. Besides me having to explain crap. I'm only staying because I only have 2 more years until retirement. I'll be 65 in July. Two more months. I want to work until 67. I don't want to change companies at this point. However, normally, I wouldn't stand for this AI crap... & I won't if they implement driver facing cameras! I don't have to.
I have this little saying; "There's too much competition out there for me to have to beg someone to..... (insert issue here)"
In this case, "there's too much competition out there for me to have to beg someone to trust me or look at my driving history." Personally, I don't have to put up with this & most experienced drivers don't either. Now who is left? Inexperienced drivers. That's who you're going to get. Inexperienced drivers that keep banging up your stuff & everyone else's stuff. The longer it goes the worse it's gonna get.
Why do you think you see Werner, Swift, Schneider, Prime & all the other AI companies with their trucks upside down or in a creek because the walking bridge fell in or low bridge strikes etc .... on a daily basis? Why don't you see some of the better companies or owner ops in these situations regularly? Experience... that's why. You know why they are working for these companies & not the above mentioned? AI etc. Babysitter companies etc.
I used to recommend the company I work for, now I caution potential drivers & especially experienced drivers that I have known for years. I tell them, you don't won't to work for this company. How'd you like for this to be the situation & reputation for your company?
Put that AI technology in you're trucks if you think it's what you need... because I can tell you, if you think you need it now, you're really gonna need it later. Because all you're gonna have is inexperienced drivers who you will need to monitor.
You think your turnover rate is bad now? Just wait for two years after installation & see how your data looks.

You want to spend money on improving your fleets safety? How about spending money & focusing on hiring experienced drivers. How about getting the pay up there & requiring 5 years minimum experience. How about putting your money in the place that will get you proven safety record (the drivers safety record). How about instead of spending your money on AI (artificial intelligence).. spend it on HI (human intelligence).

Investing in this AI technology is only going to get you more unsafe drivers & more incidents & accidents in the future & its only going to increase turnover rates & degrade your company etc.
You may not be looking to use it against drivers today for petty stuff, but tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, as you begin to see things in more routine, the more it's going to draw to your attention. Then its going to be... I saw you move your phone.. it was in your hand. I seen you drift across the fog line 3 times today, I saw this or that, and it's only going to draw more attention & create more stricter rules. Then it's going to create more turn over due to stricter rules.... by whom? More inexperienced drivers.

You can heed my words or you can believe that Elvis is still alive & working in a bait stand in Galveston. This AI business is only going to produce a worse company for you.
I'm sure that you're an educated man.. not that I have anything against education, but sometimes you can start to believe in the tooth fairy & the Easter bunny. It's all imaginary. Its all hype. Its technological. It's the smart things to do because the "experts" say it is. These "experts" aren't out here driving trucks. They have brainwashed your mind just like adults do kids. It's all smoke & mirrors. If you're smart enough, you can make make people believe whatever you want them to with paper & pencil.
Your focused too much on hype & technology. Get back to the basics & reality. Invest your money in safety reality... experience.

    Ok I'm done.

Amen brother. I can take or leave a front facing camera, I WILL NOT drive a truck with a driver facing cam. The reason they are becoming so popular is because these large fleets are hiring awful drivers straight out of school, because they don’t have to pay them much and the insurance companies claim they can’t handle the massive volume of claims. And the people that push them and enforce them the hardest, have never even turned the key of a semi. But somehow know best??? Harumph!

Forward facing cameras? Definitely. I have them in all of my POVs too.

Driver facing cameras? No. Big No. If I can't trust a driver to operate his truck safely why would I have him driving for me on the first place?

Forward facing dash cams are nice. But if the model you have can’t be easily reviewed by law-enforcement during an accident investigation, what’s the point? If no citations written to the other party after the post accident inspection by law enforcement it’s hard to get anything going. My dieselcam/gps, I can take it off the window, hand to law-enforcement, and have them push play and review the event. It has worked in the past for me.

Forward facing cameras I’m all about that because of the way people drive these days. If I drive say 600 miles in a day, I probably deal with a car swooping in front of me and then braking or almost taking my bumper off, or bobbing and weaving in and out of lanes around. About 15+ times per day as I’m sure you all do as well. That camera can save your rear. If you put one pointing in my face, I’ll leave. I won’t work with a camera in my face. I’ve been there done that.

Also, do not forget that forward facing camera only, becomes a driver facing camera when it becomes nighttime due to the reflection. They can see everything you’re doing in the cab from that forward facing camera only when it’s dark out. Remember that. Lol.
