I've been saying this for a while now on multiple threads. Trucking companies see their margins fall somewhere between 2.5% to just over 8%. Some say, possibly up to 10% My wife is planning to open medspa and the average medical spa owner makes between $300,000–$375,000 annually after expenses, making the average profit margin for a med spa between 20–25%. If this happens, my retirement plan times are cut in half.

Tesla Semi's have been breaking down more then most think. I'd never purchase one plus I haven't seen one tested in the northern arctic yet in sub degree temperatures. Electronics act different in fridged temperatures. Just remember, Over Capacity is a major problem in the current trucking industry today. And rates (the majority) are cut into half so most are operating less than $2 per mile. I even seen some trying to run at $1.40 per mile and for those with a truck payment it can't happen from what I see with food prices so high unless they haven't any other personal overhead as a home (rent or mortgage).
Cash is King, so hopefully you and your business partner have a minimum or $100k (which still isn't much in this business) operating. Spot market freight can cut it either considering the volatility of the market!

Thanks for the valuable advice. I think you are right on all 3 counts, 1. Tesla, unproven, 2. MedSpa(I should look into that) 3.running at 1.40 is crazy. you cannot live that way. You cannot not save enough money to put a side for a rig problem.

    Really?

    Doesn't sound like it.
    Why?

Let's put it another way. if this 'experience driver' is good enough to go into business with, why are they not doing it on their own?
    What aggravation?

Seriously if you are in the risk management end of finance, then you know that many of these companies are flying by the seat of their pants and one reason why we have a >90% failure rate in the first year alone, transfer of ownership is just the same as a new start up.
No you don't. Be very blunt, you really don't. You are in banking, a soft skill industry.
Yeah there are a lot, I know about 10 right now who would walk away for the right price. I also know two fleets, <100 trucks, that are up for sale and no one is even looking to buy them because the margins are shrinking.
Start with a number, I am not selling but I do buy distressed businesses. Let's see what your idea of a viable business is worth to buy.
It is different, a hell of a lot different, this is a regulated high liability industry, it has a lot of problems and obsticles that you have to maneuver around that only a few businesses have to do.
    Honestly $500k - $750k for a well managed 1 to 5 truck operation, $750 to $1.5m for 10 truck operation.

    What??

I hear some says $20K for an old truck, and a $10K for a new one.

Still doesn't make sense. I know of one guy who sold his 2 truck operation with customers for $350k and this was a turn key business with no BS with load boards. The guy who bought it invested another $350k into it to get things like a shop and office plus adding three more trucks. Within 8 months, he had the business clear of debt except for the new trucks which would be paid off in another 8 months. This past April he has everything paid off with two more trucks and drivers running gravel to diverify his fleet.
