Just as the title states, been noticing an odd occurrence lately, my 29 goes oddly quiet as the day goes on, I’m talking, squelched all the way back and only the slightest bit of static coming through. Still seems to talk fine, and receive decent. For reference, this does not occur in the AM.

Little history of the radio, probably going on 17 years old, 18 foot of good coax, routed out to the drivers side on a 2019 mack anthem, hooked up to a browning coil antenna. I’ve had “toolbox” in Baldwin FL go in to it yearly just to check things out and do preventative maintenance, is the old radio getting tired? Unfortunately I take a lot of pretty tough hits to the antenna given some of the low limbed roads I have to run on occasion, I have 4 other brownings in the garage, should I try a swap? I’ve disassembled everything out at the mount, cleaned everything up and I’m still having the same issue.

Any help would be appreciated, I’m pretty fond of this old radio, I have a black chrome edition 29 sitting in the bunk ready to go, seems cheap and not well put together though, hence the holdout on old faithful. Thanks for any guidance.

I would do a process of elimination. Since the radios receive goes quiet only in the afternoons, you can rule out coax or the antenna. These two items don't care what time of the day it is and then quit working.

Since you have another 29, just swap the old 29 for the newer, and see if the problem still exists. It the new radio receives fine all day long, then you know the problem is with your old radio.

It sounds to me like there's either a cold solder joint (which these newer Cobra CB's are getting famous for), or there's an electrolytic capacitor that's getting weak. I've even seen older cobra radios with cold solder joints.

Thanks for the response, I’ll do that. I dont like the cheapness of the new 29 I have as a spare, it’s a cool looking radio, I had clear knobs and blue back light put on it to try and get me excited about running it, I can’t let go of old faithful though. My old 29 seems so much better where quality and build is concerned, I’ll get it in to the shop and see if I can’t keep resurrecting some life in to it.

Does temperature have any kind of effect on those things?

Yes it can, especially when it comes to old electrolytic capacitors. Heat and age would be a capacitors worst enemy. Putting too much current through them and stressing them out, doesn't help either.
Heat may or may not make a difference when it comes to cold solder joints. The easiest test for a cold solder joint, is when you tap around on the radios pc board and the radio starts working normal again, then it's usually a cold solder joint.

That is indicative of what it does, a turn of a knob here and there and I’ll get a reaction out of it momentarily. Sounds like there’s hope for it which is good.

Maybe you can answer this question for me. seems like lately you can't receive real well maybe there's too much trash in the air. I've got a Big striker and a 3600 Connex. I've changed antennas coax, swapped out radios and unless the person I'm talking to has a pretty substantial radio I just can't hear them all that well. I've had it looked at run SWR changed antennas still can't get it to listen well.

You bring up a good point about the knobs on the radio. Due to age and dust, these radio control pots and switches can get dirty over time. There's a lubricant spray called Dioxit 5 that a technician can spray the controls and switches. Sometimes cleaning these pots will help a radio work again.

Again, thanks for the tips. I know guys passionate about CB’s are few and far between, and by no means am I any kind of tech, but this old 29 will talk with the best of the local radios when it’s doing its thing, I’d hate to part ways with it.

Is the truck in your avatar the one your driving? Most trucks today don't act as a proper ground plane for the antenna system to work properly. The truck bodies are actually a poor conductor of RF. Are you familiar with bonding?

    Bonding

If you don't have a proper antenna system, it won't matter what radio your using.
