If the credit grantor doesn't look at your file before opening new credit they swallow the loss for fraud. A Credit Watch, what LifeLock does for $15?mo & you can do for free is put a note to verify ID before issuing credit but it isn't required anyone do anything additional. It's a "Keep Out" sign on an unlocked door, not a lock.
A credit freeze or thaw takes 15-30 seconds & is no more complicated than signing into your email. I've done it numerous times.

No, but if enough of us start speaking up at shippers, they'll eventually get to the point where they've heard enough, realize what they are doing is actually illegal, and make a change.
For what it's worth, I never argue.... I clearly state facts in a firm manner.TheLoadOut Thanks this. -
That is a legally permissible purpose to make sure they are giving the right medication to the right person (or the representative of that person, my sister and I have both picked up medications for our mom, but we are on a first name basis with the pharmacy). It's also legal to verify identity when discussing medical information or preparing to perform a procedure to make sure the right people get the right information and the right procedure done.
Shipping clerks don't have any of that. -
It's not illegal just irritating
-
We went to a nice hotel close to home to look at their rooms for an up-coming party. The clerk wanted me to leave my D/L to be sure I brought back the room key. I said no, D/L stays in my view. Didn't get to see the room ! Anyway, shippers asking to take a pic of your D/L is not illegal, lots of places will scan the bar code on the back.

I've done it too.
PITA
And they don't need to be a credit grantor. -
I looked it up, without a legally permissible purpose to establish identity (generally limited to employment, medical, housing, financial/banking/credit applications, higher education, government assistance, or law enforcement), it is actually illegal to do more than take a look at a driver's license.
A shipping office doesn't fit any of those categories. -
Which law are you referencing? Then press charges or sue them for eleventy billion dollars & a player to be named later. Without provable injury & specific law you have a legal theory not a legal case.gentleroger and CrappieJunkie Thank this.

That applies to US Govt issued IDs, not state issued driver's license or CDL, or at least that's what the web page says.
