If you want to stand up for something you believe in then why does it matter how many stand with you?
CrappieJunkie and TexasRiverRat Thank this. -
Sorry guys, there is no justification to do more with a driver's ID than to make sure the name is right. Scanning it provides everyone with two peices of information that can be used to find the rest. One is the full name and address and the other is the date of birth. I can use both of those and find everything about that person and use it to do some real damage.
I can't trust a shipper or even a receiver for that matter with my personal information. I do not expect my drivers to deal with the same bs and have told contracted customers to stick it if they are going to play stupid games because it tells me they don't trust me or my company.wis bang, TheLoadOut and Commuter69 Thank this. -
My point exactly. I've shown my TWIC at a federal shipper and they just check the box 'verified' without issue.
If the matter is pressed further and they want a copy of my DL, my conversation will sound like:
S: I need a copy of your DL please.
M: can you please tell me what legal authority gives you the right to it, and the company policy about who has access to it, under what circumstances, how long you keep ii, and how it's destroyed?
S: it's company policy
M: that's not a legal authority. What your asking for is illegal if you can't provide me this information. Can I get a copy of your DL?
S: why do you need that?
M: since you're asking for mine without any legal authority, I need a record of who's had access to it in the event I need to investigate any irregular activities.
S:sorry I can't do that.
M: Ok fine, let me call my office to see what they say they want to do. In the meantime, please consider how dumb your policy actually is. I personally don't care if we cancel this load, they'll find me something else to do.TheLoadOut Thanks this. -
Couldn't your customer then spin it and say well you don't trust us to handle your driver's personal info?
I agree, copies shouldn't be made. We just ask for name and what state their license is from. The only reason, pre covid, that we asked for the license was to spell the driver's name correctly, cause let's face it, Russian names are hard to spell. We didn't require you to hand it to us, just hold it so I could see it to copy the name.
Since covid, spell your name and I'll do by best to figure it out. -
I'm used to my name being misspelled or mispronounced...
The joys of a common name, I'll never know....
And, for the record..... SEEING the ID isn't the problem.... copying it or capturing more information than needed IS.... but I don't trust anyone to have my personal information without a valid legal authority for it. My sister and my mom are the exceptions for medical decisions if I can't speak for myself. -
I get that. The only info we gather is name and state the license is from. Why the state? I dunno. I personally would accept a TWIC card as ID, provided you tell me what state the license was registered in. I wouldn't ask to see it. I would take your word for it. That way we both do our jobs successfully and all is well.

they can spin it any way they want, personal information isn’t required to complete the service and transaction.
see what I’m getting at is this …
if the customer is concern with theft or damaged product, they have no say in it, there is something called insurance.
all they can do is report it to the appropriate entity and move on, be it the police or fbi or the insurance company through their claim proces.
The entire purpose of the insurance company is to cover the problems what could happen, taking names and so on is not the shippers job. It comes down to the problems they further cause when they, the shipper acts as if they have the right to question everything when the carrier is a regulated entity, it is supposed to follow a set of rules that have no exceptions and that is part that the insurance company needs to cover the product. -
How do you know the customer isn't demanding DL info BECAUSE their insurance company won't cover claims if they don't have that info about the stranger taking away their multi-thousand $ freight? I spent 3 years handing over my ID for HazMat loads/unloads and then 2 years handing over ID for van/reefer loads. I also, before any of that started, had a credit freeze (not credit protection, not credit monitoring, not worthless & expensive LifeLock, not some similar sounding phrase) and all mail going to my PO box and never once had any ID theft problems. YMMVCrappieJunkie Thanks this.

Insurance companies routinely make businesses change their activities to qualify for the insurance. It's a story as old as time. You have homeowners insurance and your aren't taking door locks off of your home and truck because they will give you a check if your stuff is stolen. That's the argument the BLM goons made when they were shoplifting whole stores and burning city blocks.wichris Thanks this.
