My new to me Freightliner has a spring and ball in the drain plug. Is there a special hose or end you can screw into the plug to drain the oil?

I see there are different brands of drain plugs with check valves. Are the drain hose threads the same, or are they all unique to the brand?

Spring and ball sounds like someone installed aftermarket valve for easier drain or because they didn’t want to remove drain plug every time…. Try google search to find the type that you have…

At the shop we would have big fleet trucks that came in that had a type of quick drain installed. We didn't have that system so we just removed the quick drain just like you removed a drain plug. The most common type could be removed with a shallow 1-1/2" socket if you removed the dust cap first.

It’s just a aftermarket quick drain plug. There’s a couple different brands, and a couple different configurations. Each one is engine brand specific. Mine has a nipple, I keep it capped and put a hose on it when draining oil. Comes in handy when changing your own oil. Draining it directly into empty jugs. Old DPF 2.5 gallon jugs work great. The valves are available at some Dealerships. Im sure you can find them online easily. My guess is a trip to the plumbing dept at your local hardware store with the valve in hand, you cam find a nipple and piece of hose to fit it.
