What if he doesn't have a laptop? Then he has to get that, too, so he'd actually be money ahead getting a PCM 440 or similar.

Today...who doesn't have a laptop? Really, if you don't have a laptop you shouldn't be in the truck driving business. Forget it. Not to mention that you can get a netbook with Streets & Trips for less money and be able to use it for far more things.

Ok, so you get a netbook, and you buy Streets and Trips. How do you load it? The computer has no optical drive, since it is only a netbook.

By the way, if you don't have a laptop, how are you going to download the updates? You still need a laptop regardless.

Why? Won't a person's home computer do it just as well?

Because professional truck drivers don't live at home, that's why. Indeed, they live on the road, and anyway who wants to wait four or five weeks until they are at home to fix the many issues with their GPSs and who also wants to spend all their down time at home updating their GPS? Maybe you do but please don't assume that I do. I'll be #### if I spend all my down time at home playing on a computer. You must live a very boring life alone! Indeed, I got things to do and places to go when I go home. It's almost none stop. I rest when I'm back on the road. Not to mention that most people have laptops that serve as their on the road and at home computers.

In any event, if I would have waited until I was at home to update my TND 500, which I had to do immediately upon purchase to use it, I wouldn't have ever figure out beforehand that it wasn't worth crap until the trial period was up and it was too late to return it and I would have ended up with a $500 paper weight. And who has the patience to wait until they are at home in any event?

No...today if you still don't have a laptop, then you just shouldn't be on the road. I would go bat ##### crazy if I didn't have a laptop in the truck. In fact, I use an old Dell Latitude laptop with XP pro to do my routing, navigation, and logging, and I use a brand new 17 inch Dell XPS for everything else.

I had it and returned it, its basically a car gps with a few truck stops. But you can route using google maps then DL it yo the Garmin, to me thats the only good thing about it.

    good luck,

check out the Cobra. Been using it now for a few weeks nothing frilly or fancy but it works.
