Forgive me for the speculation but far too often I see people staring at their smartphones instead of paying attention to the road, this includes truck drivers as well, and/or allowing driver assistance features/self-driving features effectively drive a vehicle for someone and likely giving them a very false sense of security.

I completely agree but if what the article says is true she didn't have hazard lights on or safety devices/triangles out (yet I hope?) and was not even in the right lane. Driver hung herself there. Smartphone or not any driver's attention is less in an interstate lane if they don't even see brake lights (if she was indeed fully stopped with foot off brake).

Looks as if the truck hit something in the road which sheared the trailer brake line causing the trailer wheels to lock, bringing the truck to a halt.

If that was proven, i would think the award would be lower. 4 mil is really high amount for wrongful death

Just happened to me last week in Florida on I-75. I was cruising along near Lake City when my transmission dropped out of gear and developed a fault (Transmission Fault-Seek Service and Repair was illuminated on the instrument panel). Automated manual transmissions suck!
I had to coast over to the shoulder to stop and shut off the truck to “reboot” the transmission. While coasting a piece of tire casing hit one of my air lines and caused the brakes to lock up-wouldn’t budge no matter how hard I tried! Had to call Road Service for them to sent someone out to get it fixed.

There have been many times were trucks loose all electrical power and go completely dark. The more they need to power on electric circuits the more this will happen.

You can back off the brakes on the trailer and limp out of the roadway, for example. An adjustable wrench or a dedicated open end wrench will do the job. I think it was a 9/16 in wrench back in the day. It's probably metric or satanic these days, i get those mixed up.
