A stable family is much better than a little extra money. Men can tolerate and thrive with a long-distance wife. Not many wives will tolerate a long-distance husband, even the ones that say they can. Women measure quality of life by time with loved ones. What does your wife think about being gone all week?
Estes may or may not have you sleeping in the truck. Lots of LTL use your truck while you sleep in a hotel, if you are running the system or doing OTR type stuff. If you get a bid run your truck may be used by you for one shift and another driver for the other shift. My brother had the "new guy" bid run for another LTL company. He went back and forth to Chicago. While he slept in a hotel the Chicago driver used his truck for local work and NEVER was back to the yard on-time so my brother would start his trip back to his home terminal hours late, often with minor damage to the truck, and still the same appointment time.
The grass ALWAYS looks greener before you know all of the details. Don't forget about seniority in either job. Economy is slow. If it gets much slower would you rather be the guy with seniority or a the new guy with zero seniority?
Should I make a switch with jobs

Pick up a part time job for that 5th day. Door Dash or something similar. Pick up lawn mowing jobs, but just on the 5th. Your wife and kids need you home.

Starting with new company like Estes you’re on the bottom of the board first layoff you’re first one out the door then what do you do? The other job is 108 drivers , you are 80th on the board so they gotta get rid of like 28 drivers before they get to you do the math

You’re getting advice from older drivers we’ve been out here for a long time . we’ve been through everything , we know what’s best.

If your wife is a stay-at-home mom, I'd go with Estes.
Maybe luck out and snag a linehaul job right out of the gate.Last edited: Jul 31, 2024

@KaoMinerva can give the facts on pay at Estes.

If it's a money only reason. I would urge you to stay with the current job. It's a lot easier to make a budget and control the excess expenses then it is to adjust the incoming amount. Including time with the family. You'd be surprised how much you actually make when you don't have a lot of it going on things like entertainment subscriptions, excess phone costs, too many out of home lunch and dinners etc.
