No they do not force per diem! When your doing your paperwork, which is all on computer now, they will give you a choice and explain it all to you. Good luck to you!

Ed recommended that we take it because he said that unless you keep perfect records, you could end up loosing out.
I took it because, even though I keep good records, I did not want to take the chance that I would loose things.

Taking per-diem lowers your reportable income. Your paycheck and W-2 will show that you made less money. This could become a factor if you want to finance anything. It also lower's your Social Security contribution which will lower your check when your ready to collect. Companies will recommend it to you because it also lowers the Social Security tax they pay for you. There is plenty of information on it available on the Internet. Do your research and see whether or not you think it would benefit your specific situation. Don't take Maverick's or any other companies word for it.

I had per diem with my last company and im gonna tell ya....some weeks i brought home more than I grossed. Also, had to do with the fact I was claiming 3 other dependents. Per Diem comes out before taxes and is paid either weekly, monthly or quarterly depends on the company. Mine was paid back to me every week. Mine was .08 cents per mile.

No forced per diem at Maverick. Maverick offers its drivers the option of claiming per diem on their own or having it done automatically on their paycheck. Looking at one of my previous pay stubs, it's now $59.00 per day while under a load. So as i understand it, ie with this paystub, $59.00 x 5 = $295 which is deducted from my gross pay which is taxed, then the $295 is added back to my check. On the paystub, it is listed as follows: "per diem $295" "per diem offset -$295.

Taking the per diem does lower your reportable income and yes your w-2 will reflect that you made less money. Since banks do want to know exactly how much money you make before they give you a loan, it would become an issue as to wether or not you are approved for your loan. Since the home computer crashed, I'm unable due to pop up blocker to "thank" people in here so Johnnyr33...thank you for your post on this matter.

    Johnnyr33 Thanks this.

OK got to ask. Say you make $1000 for the week. Do they tax the $1000 then add on the $295 or do they take out the 295 from the 1000 which comes to 705 then tax it, then add on the 295?

    I just confused myself...:biggrin_2552:

    sewerman Thanks this.

The way iunderstand it, the per diem is not taxed. therefore its deducted from your gross income, the gross income is then taxed, and the per diem is added back into your check.
