One would think, MTI had enough resources to redo their freight focus, instead of just closing down. They must have seen declining trends. Maybe a few in charge there decided they would be better off this way - never mind over 600 people losing their jobs.
MTI - mail contractor goes out of business.

I used to do same thing for them 2 years ago, Chicago to oshkosh WI. They were night runs. Super light, didn’t pay the greatest but brought me home every day and days weren’t too long.broke down plumber and Lonesome Thank this.

They cut their own throats. I have a friend that works for the ex-mail outfit in Waterloo, Wis. ( Sheehy Trans) Back in the 90s, it's all they hauled. She had a dedicated run, 2 loads from Madison to Milwaukee. The contract specified, 2 trucks would do that regardless of the amount of mail. One night, the Madison PO was about to release the 1st Milwaukee truck, with room to spare with nothing for the 2nd truck. They took ONE of those boxes off and put it on the 2nd truck. She said that happened a lot.bzinger, The_vett, broke down plumber and 1 other person Thank this.

My mail box is about fifteen miles from town and six miles from the nearest neighbor's mail box. The county road stops at my gate. The rural route carrier will drive all that way every day because she has to, whether or not I have any mail. I told her that a couple of days a week would be fine for me but she's not allowed to do that. That's the way she bid the route so I guess she's doing alright...she's been doing it for over twenty years...but it's a good example of unnecessary cost and effort.exhausted379, hope not dumb twucker, JolliRoger and 2 others Thank this.

With the internet being what it is, 99.9% of what I get in the mail is garbage. Furthermore, the reliability is just awful.
I got a bill from my insurance company with a preaddressed return envelope. Put the check in the mail and off we go.
About a week or so later, my neighbor brings over my check and the envelope.
Stamped on it was "bad address" or some such and was returned.
Apparently Auto Owners Insurance don't know where they are.
And, apparently, the post office doesn't know my address from the lady next door.
Thankfully, I have an honest neighbor.......the check was for $1300.
My grandfather was a post master and 2 of my aunts and a cousin worked for the post office, so my loyalties are there. But somethings gotta give. I'm almost done with them entirely. Not to mention the cost of a stamp. Anyone remember the 5 cent stamp? -
During that month and a half, I think that 5 or 6 times I hauled NOTHING up and NOTHING back.....broke down plumber and 201 Thank this.

I thought the "Forever" stamp was supposed to be a one shot price "forever". I remember post cards took a 1cent stamp! They can't get good help, and at $30(?)/hr with benes, can you imagine? I live in a 48 unit compound( 6 buildings of 8 apts) and have one of those multi door mailboxes, We get a new carrier every month, and can't seem to get the right mail in the right box. I used to have my medications shipped by USPS, but am going back to my local Safeway. After several times in the wrong box, I stormed down to the PO and demanded to talk to the postmaster. I said, this isn't a credit card application, these are my medications and it's unacceptable. He was cordial, assured me it won't happen again, guess what? Happened again.exhausted379, broke down plumber, Lonesome and 2 others Thank this.

I remember the 3 cent stamps and the one cent postcard....exhausted379, broke down plumber and Opus Thank this.

I don't recall the postcards themselves being a penny, most I remember were 10 for a buck. What amazes me, at 10 for a buck, they STILL made money.Lonesome, JolliRoger and broke down plumber Thank this.
