What is the best option to upgrade from 12k front springs to 20k…i know there’s a little more than just simply swapping springs but what should be done about the actual springs?
Add leaves to the existing stack…it’s 4 now non tapered ones
Switch to a new spring pack with 3 or 4 tapered leaves
Do something with an air bag directly over the axle and stock springs
    Something else
Just curious what options provide the best ride and durability
    It’s a tandem dump truck

We would just add leaves depending on what was needed. The old spring shop we use always knows what we needed. We would take the old springs in and they well add leaves and clamp them in like factory new. They never look like add on’s. They would bend us new u-bolts for the new stack length.
The only trucks we had to go about different was our FL 60’s. Frieghtliner used a special exclusive tapered spring that Triangle and other aftermarkets don’t make. So what we did was buy a couple new ones from FL per vin and the shop cut the bushing ends off of them to add to the original stack. There again looks factory correct.

Adding a leaf to one side as a “helper” is also a trick on a truck that has a bad lean to one side due to too much weight. Like a service truck with heavier boxes or stuff on one side or a straight truck with one big fuel tank. Our spring shop has helped with that too.

We used to have a shop like that around here but unfortunately the old man died a couple years ago and his boys just don’t have the knowledge to do much more than stock parts…it’s pretty sad that shop was probably known for at least 100 miles in all directions

I hear ya. This place has been around for over a century. You go in and the walls are covered with old framed photos of all the cool stuff they’ve done over the years. Over a 100 years worth. Still going.

A 20K front end on a tandem dump truck?

How much weight do you plan on putting on it?

    What’s the tandem rated for?

Reason I ask is I once drove for a construction company years ago. Their tandem dumps were 14 yard Mack RD’s with 44K drive tandems and 18K steers. A full load to 65K gross put the drives to 50-51K and 14-15K on the steer.

Drivers are 46k I am guessing your drives were too far forward under the bed and or the bed was too short. I have an 18 foot bed with the axles pretty far back. If they load the front I’m pretty confident I can get close to 20k up there. I hope at least. I need 20 there and 34 on the drives to satisfy Illinois bridge laws

I’m going to have to take my 9900i there soon. Passenger side has a lean and bushings need replaced. I’m going to replace both leaf packs and be done with it.
