Coil RacksKyle G., CAXPT, Deere hunter and 7 others Thank this. -
Don't feel bad. I didn't know what those were for a while either, even when I first started pulling flatbed myself. If you hadn't clicked the "coil rack" link our brethren hath provided, its just a piece of metal similar to flat bar that has a triangle shape at each end of it. It's to hold two 4x4 timbers in place and keep them from being pushed out by the force of what is set on the timbers.Kyle G., CAXPT, Deere hunter and 6 others Thank this.

Generally 1 per 10,000 lbs or any fraction thereof. So a 48,500 lb coil would be 5 coil racks. 52,000 lb coil would be six racks. They’re set within the outside edges of the coil evenly spaced on the hardwood dunnage. Dunnage should be beveled

I hauled a heap of 40-45,000 pounders even a couple 48,000 with just two. To be honest I don’t think I knew there was a weight limit on them. The dot certainly doesn’t. Has anyone even seen them fail?jamespmack, Kyle G., The N.P.R.y guy and 6 others Thank this.

prevent steel coils from rocking and rolling. Use friction mats under coil racks for a better grip and prevent sliding.
What is a coil rack trucking? How to use coil racks?
- Place rubber friction mat on flatbed
- Place coil racks on top rubber friction mats
- Place lumber on each end of coil racks to form cradle
Max weight distribution per steel coil rack is 10,000 lbs approximately.
How many coil racks are needed to support 30,000 pound coil?
Three coil racks are required. Four coil racks are recommended.
WARNING: Coil rack itself is not a cargo control device and should not be accounted for in total cargo control system WLL calculatKyle G., CAXPT, The N.P.R.y guy and 4 others Thank this. -
Above is from My Tarp site regarding coil rack weight rating most others say same thing. Never seen one rack rated above 10k.

I ain’t saying you’re wrong, just saying I didn’t know. But I guess that’s what happens when you just buy a flatbed and go truckingLast edited: Oct 6, 2024

Tri city canvas sells or sold big racks to use with 6x6’s on big single coils. They were made out of at least 4”x 5/16 or 3/8. We had to buy two sets in a pinch. I don’t remember a WLL on them but I don’t believe that’s required, never seen a wll on a piece of hardwood.

I drove for TMC 1990 till 92 drove one of the last W9 hoods they had then a T600. Back then we had to keep the truck light enough to haul a 50,000 single coil. I probably hauled a half dozen that big. Most of those came out of the river rogue plant. Never used more than 2 racks , don't know if there was a weight limit on racks then or not. I just didn't know any better. TMC was a different company than in it is now.
