Yes,they most certainly did. In fact there was fatal accident involving a Fontaine fifth wheel that dropped a trailer on a highway in Ohio.

Just this morning spotted WFX lost his trailer. The good thing it's happens when he or she just turned to on ramp to I-70.

Yep, tug test is not adequate. Visual inspection of 5th wheel jaws have secured kingpin. Tug test is not verifying that has taken place. Ensuring 5th wheel jaws operate properly and lever hinge is lubricated and not bent. You don’t just hook up and tug test and you’re good, there’s more to it. Get to know your equipment and recognize When components need to be adjusted or replaced one worn out.Last edited: Oct 20, 2024

Any truck that has a Fontaine fifth wheel I will replace with a Holland right away.
Those Fontaines are pure junk.
They also cost a lot more than Hollands. More complex moving parts just to get that little bit more slack out of the king pin.
Required a lot more maintenance, cleaning of old grease, dirt and then start having issues that can’t be fixed. Scrap.mjd4277 Thanks this.
