I have 3 carriers with in-house schools that are asking me to commit to a date to begin their driving school, Central is one of them. Please help me with this decision. I value the advice and suggestions from members of this forum so here I am asking for yours. I've been accepted at 2 community colleges but their timing for courses this summer is not fitting in with my timing to get underway in this industry as a driver. Please post your thoughts and advice or simply respond to the "yes" or "no" poll I'm adding to this thread. I will set up the poll so that participants will not be identified.
Thank you very much,
Oldnewbiegonnabe
P.S. Even if you don't drive for Central, or haven't driven for Central, but have some good first/second hand knowledge, please chip in. There's a few of you out there who have been going round and round, in a good way, with me in this forum during the last six months.....sound off!!!!
Hey Central drivers! Would you help me make a decision? Yea or nay!

Could you list all three ? I'm sure you've read the central thread, I did read where one of their lease drivers was complaining about making less than two hundred dollars a week for seven weeks straight.
If your going to drive for .26 cpm you might want to think about a dry van company because I can tell you from experience that grocery warehouses suck. That is if any of the dry van companies are available to you. JMOJustSonny Thanks this. -
I'd list them but then I think I would confuse the issue. However, both of the others have dry van divisions. One, however, would require that I relocate and establish residency about 300 miles from where I live now. I'm holding on to that as a last resort but may just go that way because I really like the carrier. I've thought about using the address of some friends I have in that area but, too me, that just doesn't seem like the thing to do because I wouldn't really be living with the friends. The way carriers are scrutinizing new hires these days, I want everything on the up and up. Don't want to get to school and then be sent home for any avoidable reason.wildbill123 Thanks this.

I understand. If you use a friends address you might have to change the address on your license beforehand. Good luck.JustSonny Thanks this.

Central - low pay, pushes leasing. must stay 1 year. but some students say that it changed to 8 - 10 months because they seem to be double charged weekly (double reimbursed too). Tuition reimbursement starts immediately. After 1 year nothing more is owed. Tuition $3000
Swift - lower pay but after 1 year they make 1cpm more than Central does in 1 year. Swift has a bad rap with the trucking community for notoriously hitting other trucks. Be prepared to catch a wrath of crap when you pull into the truck stop. Pushes on leasing. Must stay 1 year just to start tuition reimbursement, If memory serves me right, Tuition reimbursement starts after 1 year. Tuition $4300 (if i remember)
CRE - Aggressively pushes leasing. forced teams. low pay
Remember, if you dont expect a whole lot then you wont be too disappointed. You read all the posts so you should have a decent idea of what to expect.JustSonny and The Challenger Thank this. -
i know i will likely get beat down for this, but if you were excepted i would say prime,as far as the big carriers go,it is a nice outfit to start out at

You would be better off dropping a steel beam on your foot and signing up for disability rather than working for Prime, you will make more money that way!JustSonny Thanks this.

I'm gonna say Central is a good one to start out with. You get the experience of a manual transmission and learn how to do both dry van van and reefer loads. Lows: You will wait at shippers during a live unload. Member JJ Ranch is a former Central driver.
KHJustSonny Thanks this. -
You may also wait at the farm while they are picking the crop. NO BSJustSonny Thanks this.

I see it this way!!!
All companies have BS, you have to make up your mind which one has the BS you can stomach.
Things I didn't like about Central was the lack of miles, that's as a Lease Op not company driver so it really can't be compared.
The school is fast paced so be prepared, and your stuck there for a year.
Central see you as a butt to fill a seat and that's it your a number not a name.
Miles will be hit and miss all depends on your FM.
They can make or break you. (fm that is)
good luck with whoever you decide to go with!JustSonny Thanks this.
