Is there a more preferred method of training amongst the larger carriers. I'm considering private driving schools versus community college training courses. Any advice?

I would try to find a friend or relative to teach me and than trust me with their vehicle or rent a large enough vehicle with help from a licensed friend to get my license.

Most of the bad part of trucking starts at these schools and the expense of them.I was taught by my father as was most of the drivers my age.Paying for being taught is one thing but what they charge verses what is learned is another matter.

I actually have my AZ already, have had it for about three years. My problem is that I've not really done anything with it. I've put on a grand total of 18 hours behind the wheel of a tractor trailer since then. I heard that with no experience, a driver will be required to have schooling in order to be hired on by a major company - probably required for insurance purposes.
